What you will do
You will be part of a development team responsible for a business-critical SCADA system that operates around the clock to keep a major energy company's power perimeter balanced across Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. The system is being extended to integrate more flexible assets and support the energy transition.
Your role includes:
- Develop and maintain the SCADA system that keeps the power perimeter in balance
- Work on both front-end and back-end development using SCIL (a proprietary backend language), HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript/TypeScript
- Apply architectural design principles to build scalable and robust solutions
- Apply software craftsmanship principles (SOLID, DRY, KISS, YAGNI) to build clean, maintainable, and resilient code
- Collaborate in an Agile/SAFe environment with analysts, dispatchers, and technical teams
- Contribute to on-call support after onboarding to ensure system availability and grid stability
The tools you develop are used to:
- Monitor production assets and available capacities from power plants
- Provide information exchange between transmission system operators and the real-time SCADA system
- Calculate real-time setpoints to send to power plants to maintain balance, based on production plans, real-time acquisition, and other inputs including Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR), Automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (aFRR), and Manual Frequency Restoration Reserve (mFRR)
What we are looking for
- A master's degree with a specialisation in IT and/or electrical engineering (e.g. civil engineer, industrial engineer in software, electronics, or electromechanics)
- At least 3 years of relevant experience
- An industrial mindset combined with a high level of software engineering expertise (good architecture, design patterns). The systems must be very stable, as any problem can have a significant impact
- Understanding of the basics of electricity production and grid transport
- A proactive and structured approach to your work, helping to minimise stress and ensure stability in a high-responsibility environment
- Attention to designing resilient solutions that support 24/7 operations, with availability to provide support in case of critical issues
- A solution-driven attitude with a sense of responsibility for your tasks. When problems occur, you must find quick fixes immediately, with sustainable solutions required if the quick fix is only a workaround
- Motivation to work in a team responsible for real-time activities
- Team player skills in complex project organisations, with the ability to interact easily with peers, analysts, architects, business representatives, and other teams
- Ability to self-learn and take initiatives to improve the environment and practices
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) at all levels, with the ability to articulate to both technical and non-technical audiences, internal and external
