The Biosphere Impact Studies (BIS) research unit at SCK CEN in Mol is seeking a researcher who combines experimental work and modelling to evaluate dispersion, exposure and effects of radiological contamination on humans and the environment.

You will design and perform experiments (plants focus), analyse results and translate them into mathematical models for radiological impact studies, site remediation projects and international collaborations.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in ecology, biophysics, bioscience engineering, environmental sciences, or a related discipline.
  • Strong experimental and methodological laboratory skills with high safety and quality standards.
  • Strong analytical skills and environmental knowledge.
  • Proven experience in modelling and translating experimental results into conceptual and mathematical applications.
  • Experience in applied research projects, particularly in radiological impact and site remediation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (reports, risk assessments, scientific publications).

  • Analyse complex datasets and translate them into applicable mathematical models and tools.

Job description

The Biosphere Impact Studies (BIS) research unit at SCK CEN in Mol is looking for a researcher who combines experimental work and modelling to evaluate the dispersion, exposure, and effects of radiological contamination on humans and the environment. Within the multidisciplinary BIS team, you work at the interface of laboratory experimentation and modelling. You develop and perform experiments (with a focus on plants and ecosystems), analyse results, and translate them into conceptual and mathematical models used in radiological impact studies, environmental risk assessments, and site remediation projects. You contribute to both fundamental and applied research and turn insights into practical tools and evidence-based recommendations for projects, policymakers, and international collaborations. In addition, you support impact studies and remediation projects through scientific analyses. You communicate results clearly, contribute to scientific publications, and present your work at national and international forums, in close collaboration with expert colleagues.
