Huawei Belgium Research and Development Group (formally Caliopa) is a center of excellence for silicon photonics design and processing. It was initially created as a spin-off from the University of Gent and Imec in 2010 and was acquired by Huawei in 2013. Huawei is the global No. 2 telecom solution provider and uses approximately one sixth of all photonics components produced in the world.
Huawei is continuously investing in silicon photonics research and development to generate top notch solutions based on this technology. Huawei Belgium R&D group is at the heart of this program. The group is located in Gent, a vibrant city in Belgium in the heart of Europe.
To strengthen our team, we are now looking for a Photonics Design Expert.
Job responsibilities
- Work as part of a team of photonic engineers and product designers dedicated to develop Huawei’s silicon photonics device and product portfolio
- Lead new concept studies as well as product development projects from R&D stage toward new products introduction (NPI)
- Design and model photonic components and circuits
- Contribute to chip design reviews to assure that designs meet defined specifications
- Validate designs by defining test plans and performing statistical analysis of measurement data in the R&D phase
- Guide the definition of PIC-based system architectures for novel applications (e.g., new materials for high-baud-rate transceivers, optical DSP, 6G photonics, RF/mmWave photonics, photonics for AI, 3D/4D image sensing, photonic neural network)
- Work closely with local processing and test teams, as well as with global based component/module teams
- Interact with stakeholders to secure funding and resources for new R&D project execution
- Perform literature reviews and participate to conferences to continuously support our R&D activities with new ideas and solutions
Requirements & Qualifications
- In depth knowledge of integrated optics and optoelectronics components and systems
- Education requirements: Ph.D. in Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field, and 5+ years of work experience in the photonics industry
- Experience requirements:
Design and test of silicon photonics and III-V components
Working knowledge of how to integrate PICs with EICs, RF ICs, and driving circuitry in transceiver modules or equivalent sub-system applications
Proven track record of project/product management skills, bringing new components or systems to market in volume production
Experience in product development (spec. definition, yield improvement strategies, customer-oriented attitude, business acumen for new business opportunities) would be an asset
Experience in effective communication with stakeholders to secure internal funding for new R&D projects as well as market/business landscape analysis
Hands on experience with photonics modelling tools (e.g. Photon design, Lumerical, COMSOL, CST)
Hands on experience with layout tools (e.g. Tanner L-Edit, Luceda Ipkiss)
Experience with Luceda Ipkiss would be an advantage
Experience with Python would be an advantage
Experience with VPI software would be an advantage
Language
- Fluent in English (written and spoken),
Dutch or Chinese language knowledge is a plus
