Job summary
Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Brussels invites applications for a full-time PhD-scholarship in photonics within the Brussels Photonics (B-PHOT) group. The project focuses on laser-dynamics-based fiber sensing to detect ultrasonic guided waves, with a collaboration across disciplines and strict emphasis on innovation.
The candidate will work on experimental setups, simulations and benchmarking, joining a renowned team that partners with industry and academia.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a relevant scientific field (Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics or Applied Math).
- Strong knowledge of photonics, sensing, laser physics or nonlinear dynamics is a plus.
- Good programming skills (MATLAB/Python or similar) and willingness to learn.
- Excellent English skills (CEFR C1) and ability to collaborate across disciplines.
Responsibilities
- Construct an experimental setup for precise ultrasonic guided wave generation.
- Explore strategies for interrogating optical fibers using laser dynamics.
- Benchmark the most promising strategies focusing on sensitivity and speed.
- Collaborate with a second PhD researcher to optimize the fiber-sensor architecture.
