A leading biodiversity information system in Belgium is seeking a Data Science Officer to support data management in Horizon2020 EcoPotential project and assist in technical developments for OBIS infrastructure. August 17, 2017 - iOBIS OBIS secretariat staff data science officer

Dr Samuel Bosch joined the IOC of UNESCO on 15 August 2017, and is based at the IOC project office for IODE in Oostende, Belgium, where he will support the OBIS secretariat as the OBIS data science officer.

Samuel’s main tasks are supporting the data management work for the European Horizon2020 EcoPotential project, as well as supporting the OBIS data manager (Pieter Provoost) in the technical developments of a new OBIS infrastructure and technology stack (OBIS2.0).

Samuel obtained an MSc in Geography in 2006 and a PhD in Biology at the Ghent University in June 2017. Samuel combines 10 years of working experience as a scientist and software developer. When he worked for the Flanders Marine Institute, as part of the LifeWatch project, he created and implemented automated quality control procedures for the OBIS database, contributed to the OBIS R package and developed a marine benchmark dataset for species distribution modeling based on species occurrences from the OBIS database.

His expertise is a great addition to the OBIS secretariat.
