Tractebel, part of the ENGIE Group, seeks a Medior Radiological Characterisation Engineer to deliver projects in radiological characterisation and related engineering tasks. You will act as an interface between Doel site activities and the Competence Center, developing programmes and ensuring timely delivery.

The role requires a Master’s or PhD in engineering or sciences, 5+ years in the nuclear sector, and fluency in Dutch and English (French a plus).

Medior Radiological Characterisation Engineer


The Tractebel Business Area Gas, Energy & Nuclear is looking for a Medior Engineer in Radiological Characterisation to join its Radiation Protection, Radwaste and Decommissioning Competence Centre.


This Competence Centre is responsible for all engineering aspects in the field of:



  • Radiation Protection;

  • Radiation Monitoring;

  • Radiological Characterisation;

  • Radioactive Waste Management (operational and dismantling waste);


Within this structure, the Radiological Characterisation team is responsible for:



  • The radiological characterisation of building, structure and equipment in a nuclear installation through measurements, sampling campaigns, simulations and calculations;

  • The final radiological characterisation of waste produced during operation, post-operation and dismantling phases of nuclear installation, including

  • The set up of strategies for the characterisation processes

  • The selection and procurement of measurement systems

  • The realization of theoretical and/or numerical and/or empirical studies

  • The definition of scaling factors and methodology.


The team delivers high-level engineering and consultancy services to Electrabel as well as other national and international clients. The team works closely with other Competence Centers, the project managers, the Client, the safety authorities and the radioactive waste management agencies.

Your key responsibilities


  • As Radiological Characterisation Engineer, you are responsible for the successful delivery of the projects, tasks and studies entrusted to you.

  • In close collaboration with your colleagues and your team leader, you act as an interface between on-site activities at Doel nuclear power plant and Competence Center, ensuring alignment between field and office work.

  • You contribute to the development of characterisation programmes, perform engineering studies and ensure proper follow-up of projects.

  • To maintain close interaction with field teams, you will work up to 3 days per week on the Doel site.

  • Conducting radiological characterisation studies in line with the expectations of the Client and the radioactive Waste Management Agencies;

  • Monitor and support the operation of gamma spectrometry and dose rate measurement equipment, while progressively developing strong technical expertise in this field in order to support clients’ activities;

  • Developing and applying capabilities with computer codes such as MicroShield, MCNP or RayXpert but also in-house Python calculation codes and data treatments tools;

  • Writing technical specifications and follow-up of orders for the procurement of measurement systems and radiological campaigns;

  • Develop and maintain a strong expertise in radiological characterisation, based on national and international references, standards and practices;

  • Share your knowledge and experiences with Clients and colleagues to ensure alignment concerning the work to be realized and setting the right expectations;

  • Delivering ‘quality on time’: in order to achieve this objective, you will get all support required in terms of technical training, coaching and availability of (IT) resources;

  • Verifying work performed by your colleagues guaranteeing the expected high quality level;

  • Correctly applying the Integrated Management System (IMS) procedures;

  • Providing regular feedback concerning ongoing activities to your team leader and your hierarchy, while working autonomously towards the goals defined for you;

  • Identifying and implementing possible synergies with other teams and/or competence centers;

  • Contributing to the preparation of technical bids;

  • Providing (internal) presentations and trainings;

  • Participating actively to regular meetings with your colleagues during which workload, technical issues, project follow-up, development strategy and transversal activity coordination are discussed.

  • You will collaborate actively with your colleagues from Project Management and Competence Centre departments and build a close relationship while working for the same goal, actively developing cross department projects for your Clients.

  • You act as an ambassador of Tractebel and the ENGIE Group values (Ethics, QHSE,…) in all your contacts, both inside and outside the ENGIE group, and other external stakeholders.


We would love to hear from people with


  • You have the drive to become a technical expert in this field

  • You hold a master’s degree or PhD in engineering or sciences (preferably in physics);

  • You have experience (at least 5 years) in the nuclear sector;

  • You are fluent in Dutch and in English (French in an asset);

  • You can draw up reports in Dutch and in English;

  • You are willing to work on the Doel site up to 3 days per week;

  • You are flexible and creative in finding technical solutions;

  • You combine autonomy with strong team spirit;

  • You are open to gain new competencies as well as to share them;

  • You are comfortable with IT tools (MS Office); knowledge of Python is an advantage.
