Bank Degroof Petercam SA is seeking a Financial Services Legal Counsel to reinforce its Legal Department in Brussels. The role reports to the Head of Legal and focuses on day-to-day banking and corporate law, regulatory implementation, and risk management across private and investment banking sectors.

The successful candidate will have a Belgian Master in Law, at least 5 years in-house experience in a financial institution, and fluency in French with knowledge of Dutch and English.

In order to realize our ambitious objectives, Bank Degroof Petercam is looking to reinforce its Legal Department with a Financial Services Legal Counsel. The Legal Department is a central and dynamic team dedicated to supporting and providing legal assistance to the management, business, and operational teams of the Bank, including the Investment Banking and Private Banking departments. The department is structured into four sub‑teams: Legal Private Banking, Legal Investment Banking, Legal Outsourcing and Contracting and Private Equity. The department covers matters relating to (private) banking, financial, corporate and civil law, intellectual property, IT, and outsourcing contracting. It ensures regulatory compliance, manages legal risks, and implements best professional practices across the Bank.

Your position

In this role you will report directly to the Head of Legal and will :

• Provide day-to-day legal support to various teams and departments as required;
• Advise and make recommendations on group strategic projects, including regulatory implementation projects, from inception to implementation;
• Support management and departments such as Corporate Secretary, Compliance, Investment Banking, and Private Banking regarding banking, financial, and corporate regulations;
• Assist with files related to intellectual property, IT, and outsourcing contracting;
• Draft, review, and make recommendations on legal and contractual documentation, legal forms, and template documents to ensure clarity, accuracy, and proactive risk management;
• Follow up on claims and litigation files;
• Stay informed of new developments in banking, financial, civil, and commercial law, and organize training sessions for colleagues to ensure implementation across the Bank;
• Identify, assess, and manage legal opportunities and needs in a business‑oriented manner, in line with local laws, regulations, and best practices;
• Collaborate closely with members of the three sub‑teams within the Legal Department.

Your profile

What we look for:

• Belgian Master in Law;
• Min. 5 years of relevant professional experience gained in an in‑house role within the legal department of a financial institution with a particular expertise or outspoken interest in banking and finance law combined with a generalist experience. We will consider applicants with relevant banking and finance experience gained in a law firm;
• Experience in data protection legislation and/or in IT and outsourcing contracting in the banking sector is a plus;
• Fluent in French (written and spoken), good knowledge of Dutch & English;
• Analytical thinker with sound business acumen, objectivity and accountability;
• Ability to translate complex theoretical and legal principles into pragmatic and solution‑oriented advice;
• Ability to handle a wide scope of subject matters and eager to learn;
• A true team player with an ability to build up good relationships with your colleagues (both within the legal department and the business departments);
• Process‑orientated, able to work autonomously, with excellent organizational skills;
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
• Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office.
