European Endowment for Democracy (EED) is hiring an Internal Accountant in Brussels to cover maternity leave for eight months. The role involves a broad range of accounting, financial, compliance and audits, with participation in a transition to new accounting software.

You report to the Head of Finance, collaborating with the finance team to ensure accuracy, compliance and timely reporting in a purpose-driven, multicultural environment.

Qualifications

• University degree in Accountancy, Finance, or related field.
• At least 5 years full-time experience in financial accounting, preferably in Not-for-profit.
• At least 2 years of experience with a Belgium-registered company.
• Fluent in French and English.
• Detail-oriented, discreet and highly organised.

Responsabilités

• Check data entry of accounting transactions in the accounting software and ensure ledger accuracy.
• Post journal entries, including payroll, accrued expenses, revenue and grant closures.
• Perform monthly bank reconciliations and other reconciliations as needed.
• Assist in annual accounts closure and statutory audits.
• Prepare quarterly TVA (VAT) returns and maintain records.
• Manage Peppol account and coordinate with suppliers on billing discrepancies.

We’re looking for an Internal Accountant to join our Brussels-based team to cover maternity leave. It is for eight months with extension possible. This opportunity offers a broad exposure through undertaking a wide range of accounting, financial, operational, compliance and audits.

Here at EED, we are also in an exciting period as we are in the early stages of developing and preparing for the transition to a new accounting software. The position holder will be an important member of the project team.

What You’ll Do

You’ll report to the Head of Finance and work closely with other members of the finance team. Your key responsibilities will include:

• Checks data entry of accounting transactions in the custom-made accounting software and ensuring the transactions are also in the project ledger.
• Posts journal entries including for payroll, accrued expenses, revenue and grant closures.
• Performs accounting reconciliations periodically including monthly bank reconciliations.
• Plays a key role in the closure of the annual accounts and statutory audit.
• Preparation of the quarterly VAT (TVA) returns.
• Manages the EED Peppol account and acts as a liaison for suppliers to reconcile any billing discrepancies and prepares and maintains accounting documents and records, including updating the aged debtors. (balance âgée)
• Ensures that allocating records are accurate and timely for local administration and audits
• Provides input into development of EED accounting processes and the implementation of a new accounting software.
• Complies with general office policies, procedures and all legal requirements.
• Performs other relevant tasks as and when requested by the Head of Finance
• Maintains confidentiality.

What You Bring

You have:

• A university degree or qualifications in Accountancy, Finance, Business Administration or a related field
• At least 5 years of full-time professional experience in financial accounting preferably within the Not-for-profit sector.
• At least 2 years of experience working with a Belgium registered company.
• Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other standard financial tools
• Full professional working knowledge of French and English.

Bonus points for:

• Prior work experience in international non-profits or grant-making environments
• Familiarity with European Commission Financial Regulations or similar donor compliance systems would be a bonus.
