The Nature Conservancy in Durham, North Carolina seeks a part-time on-site Peatlands Climate & Restoration Scientist to advance climate mitigation and restoration strategies for wetlands in eastern NC.

The role uses spatial analysis, modeling, and climate projections to inform management plans, quantify wildfire risk reductions, carbon storage, and other ecosystem services, and collaborates with scientists and practitioners across programs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field with ~1 year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience with GIS software and data to create maps.
• Experience managing large, complex spatial datasets and analytics systems; proficiency in data analysis tools and coding environments.

Responsabilités

• Estimate the reduction in wildfire risk due to peatland rehabilitation in North Carolina using historical data and risk factors.
• Analyze relationships among fire risk, peatland drainage, and drivers of fire occurrence.
• Evaluate ecosystem service benefits from reduced fire risk, including carbon storage and air quality.
• Develop models to assess future wildfire risk under climate scenarios, including restoration reversal risks.
• Collaborate with scientists and practitioners to integrate findings into investment strategy and planning.
• Develop and maintain a geospatial database with fire, peatland, climate data and determinants of wildfire risk.
• Present analyses to technical and non-technical audiences, highlighting trends and drivers.
• Prepare reports and manuscripts communicating findings for conservation decision-making.
• Contribute to knowledge sharing across programs and with external partners.
