WLG in Belgium is seeking a database engineer to keep SQL Server based systems available, fast and recoverable as we move towards the cloud. The role focuses on automating tasks, testing high availability and disaster recovery, and documenting runbooks before incidents arise.

The candidate will install, patch, monitor and tune on‑premises and Azure cloud databases, design DR strategies, build pipelines, and collaborate with app, infra and cloud teams to ensure reliability at scale.

Qualifications

• Expert-level SQL Server administration, tuning and troubleshooting.
• Real experience of availability groups, failover clustering, replication and recovery.
• Cloud database work, preferably on Azure — managed instance, database services, virtual machines.
• Working knowledge of PostgreSQL and MySQL or MariaDB, and ideally MongoDB.
• Automation in PowerShell, T-SQL or Python, and comfort with infrastructure as code and deployment pipelines.
• Sound fundamentals: relational design, indexing, query optimisation and capacity planning.

This is a database platform role rather than a query-tuning one. The estate is mixed — SQL Server at its centre, Azure alongside it, and open-source engines around the edges — and the job is to keep all of it available, fast and recoverable while it moves steadily towards the cloud.

It suits a database engineer who automates what they do twice, who takes high availability and disaster recovery seriously enough to test them, and who writes the runbook before it is needed.

What You Would Be Doing
