PAN Europe, a Brussels-based environmental NGO, offers an internship focused on gathering and analysing pesticide data, including residues in food. You will participate in activities related to EU institutions and advocacy, gaining experience in toxicology, policy-making, and communication within a multilingual team.

The role combines office and home work (hybrid) in Brussels, with mandatory in-person presence twice weekly and 19 hours per week for four months.

Qualifications

About us

Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Europe is a Brussels-based environmental NGO with a diverse, multidisciplinary and multilingual team. PAN Europe works to eliminate hazardous pesticides in Europe and beyond, reducing dependency on pesticides, and promoting ecologically sound alternatives to chemical pest control.

PAN Europe is an umbrella organisation representing 58 member organisations across Europe, including NGOs, scientific institutes, and farmers’ groups. Together, they contribute to EU policy development, legislative processes, and evidence -based advocacy on pesticides and sustainable agriculture. PAN Europe also leads European -level campaigns, strategic litigation, and EU -funded projects that accelerate the transition towards pesticide -free food systems.

Internship description

The internship is focused primarily on gathering and analysing the pesticide data, including pesticide residues in food. In parallel, you will be involved in PAN Europe’s daily tasks related to the work carried out by the European Commission, EFSA, the European Parliament, Member States and our different NGO partners and contribute to our goal of reducing the harm caused by pesticides in the EU.

Working with a very motivated team of experts in agriculture, toxicology and policy-making, you will gain valuable knowledge and experience in advocacy, awareness raising, communication activities, toxicology and food systems.

Main tasks

• Support PAN Europe in collection of data from existing databases across different European countries


• Carry out analysis of pesticide residues in food, including the official monitoring data


• Use statistical programmes and data analysis softwares to present the results


• Support related investigations and report-writing


• Liaise with NGO partners


• Help writing/disseminating communication material


• Contribute to writing policy documents


• Αssist in organising events.

Location

This position is based in Brussels, Belgium. We allow a combination of home and office work (hybrid) but physical presence is mandatory twice per week.

Person Specification

Education and training

• A degree in Life Sciences or toxicology, Political Sciences, Law or European Affairs;


• A Master’s degree in a related field (desirable).

Experience and knowledge

• Demonstrable interest in protection from chemical pollution, environmental issues and/or food systems;


• Good knowledge of data analysis, excel and relevant statistical programmes.

Key competences

• Fluent in English, French and/or Dutch (other EU official languages are considered an extra asset);


• Excellent written and oral communication skills;


• Works cooperatively with others in team;


• Positive and proactive attitude;


• Commitment to PAN Europe’s vision, mission, values, and a working style which reflects these;

Internship Requirements

Candidates for this internship must have the pre-existing right to work in Belgium and this right must be extended to at least six months from the start date of the internship.

We ask that the intern commits to 3 days per week of work (19 hours), for a 4-month duration .

What we offer

This internship is paid and should ideally start as soon as possible, ideally in October . The legal framework under which we hire our interns in Belgium is that of the ‘Convention d’Immersion Professionnelle’. You can find more details here (available only in FR/NL). You will also receive lunch vouchers at a face value of 8,00 EUR per day, as well as 10 days of paid annual leave (prorated if internship starts half way through the calendar year).
