Job summary

The University of Melbourne’s Infrastructure team within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology is seeking a Technician to support hands-on teaching and research across busy workshops and makerspaces. You will provide technical advice, design and build bespoke rigs, and coach students in safe, industry-aligned practice.

Qualifications

  • Hold a relevant degree or trade qualification, or equivalent experience in technical workshop environments.
  • Bring proven expertise in machining, fabrication, mechatronics, electronics or woodwork.
  • Demonstrate experience with CAD, embedded systems, robotics, AI, automation, plumbing or gas fitting.
  • Offer strong communication skills and a customer service mindset when supporting diverse students and staff.
  • Demonstrate a growth mindset, contributing practical improvement ideas for training, processes and user experience.
  • Prioritise safety, holding or willing to obtain a Working with Children Check and relevant high-risk licences.

Responsibilities

  • Provide practical technical advice, design input and fabrication services that enable high-quality teaching, research and projects.
  • Engage directly with students and academics, supporting competency-based training, project work and effective learning outcomes.
  • Coach and mentor workshop and makerspace users in safe tool use, machinery operation and compliant work practices.
  • Undertake Safety in Design activities and ensure all manufactured work meets safety, compliance and documentation requirements.
  • Operate, service and maintain workshop equipment, reporting issues and supporting reliable, well-managed technical facilities.
