Job summary

Shire of Carpentaria invites applications for a Workshop Leading Hand at the Normanton Depot. You will support the Workshop Foreman, coordinate daily workshop tasks and provide hands-on guidance to Diesel Fitters and Apprentices.

This hands-on leadership role covers diagnostics, repairs, welding and hydraulic work across onsite and remote camps. Candidates should hold a recognised Mechanical Trade Certificate in Diesel Fitting or similar, with experience in heavy vehicles and hydraulic systems,

Qualifications

• Recognised Mechanical Trade Certificate in Diesel Fitting, Heavy Commercial Vehicles or Light Vehicle Maintenance.
• Demonstrated mechanical servicing, maintenance and fault-finding experience.
• Experience with heavy vehicles, machinery and hydraulic systems.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate daily workshop jobs and monitor progress.
• Provide hands-on mechanical and technical support to staff.
• Guide and mentor fitters and apprentices.
• Assist with maintenance scheduling, repairs and project work.
• Undertake diagnostics, repairs, welding, hydraulics and general maintenance.

Job description

Workshop Leading Hand Take the next step in your mechanical career with Carpentaria Shire Council. Carpentaria Shire Council is seeking an experienced and motivated Workshop Leading Hand to join our Engineering Services team based at the Normanton Depot. This is a hands‑on leadership role supporting the Workshop Foreman with the day‑to‑day coordination of workshop activities, while providing technical guidance and support to Diesel Fitters and Apprentice Diesel Fitters.

About the Role

• Coordinate daily workshop jobs and monitor work progress.
• Provide hands‑on mechanical and technical support to workshop staff.

• Undertake diagnostics, repairs, welding, hydraulics and general mechanical maintenance.

To Be Successful

• A recognised Mechanical Trade Certificate in Diesel Fitting, Heavy Commercial Vehicles or Light Vehicle Maintenance.
• Demonstrated mechanical servicing, maintenance and fault‑finding experience.
• Experience working with heavy vehicles, machinery and hydraulic systems.
• The ability to lead, communicate effectively and provide guidance to other employees.
• A minimum Heavy Rigid (HR) Driver Licence, Multi Combination (MC) desirable.
• Heavy machinery tickets or a willingness to obtain them.

Classification & Salary

• Classification: LGO Level 4 Outdoor
• Salary: $103,435.07 – $52.35 per hour (dependent on qualifications and experience), plus superannuation and applicable allowances in accordance with the Carpentaria Shire Council Certified Agreement.
