Job summary

Meander Valley Council in Tasmania seeks an experienced Work Health and Safety Officer to lead practical WHS initiatives across office, field and multi-site operations. The role focuses on developing and embedding safety systems, policies and continuous improvement within a diverse local government environment.

You will provide hands-on guidance to teams, conduct site visits, training and investigations, and promote a proactive safety culture in collaboration with the People & Safety Team.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of WHS legislation, regulations and codes of practice.
  • Experience in incident investigation and risk assessment with corrective actions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain WHS systems and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide practical WHS leadership and clear, actionable advice across operations.
  • Develop, maintain and improve WHS frameworks, policies and risk processes.
  • Conduct site inspections and incident investigations; implement improvements.
  • Deliver inductions, toolbox talks and WHS training; promote safety culture.
  • Support Ideagen EHS system use, provide user training and assistance.

Meander Valley Council is seeking an experienced Work Health and Safety Officer to join its People & Safety Team and provide practical, reliable and effective WHS advice and support across Council operations.

Based in beautiful Westbury, an easy drive at 25 minutes from Launceston, Meander Valley Council services a broad and diverse local government area across northern Tasmania, including rural land, small towns, villages and growing urban settlements. This creates a varied and interesting WHS environment, across office-based teams, outdoor crews, roads, parks, facilities, waste, contractors, volunteers and community-facing services.

Reporting to the Team Leader People & Safety, this role will develop, maintain and strengthen Council's safety systems and embed a positive safety culture. This is a hands‑on WHS role for someone who enjoys being out and about, building relationships and turning WHS into practical solutions that work for our people and operations.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Practical WHS leadership: Provide clear, practical advice across Council operations, helping teams identify risks and meet their WHS obligations.
  • Safety systems and continuous improvement: Develop, maintain and improve Council's WHS frameworks, policies, procedures and risk management processes.
  • Field‑based safety: Conduct site inspections, incident investigations, working with teams to identify improvements and implement effective controls.
  • Training and engagement: Deliver inductions, toolbox talks and WHS training, and promote a positive safety culture through engaging communications and initiatives.
  • WHS systems: Support the ongoing use and development of Council's Ideagen EHS safety management system, including user support and training.
To thrive in this role, you will bring:
  • Your strong knowledge of WHS legislation, regulations and codes of practice, with the ability to translate requirements into practical solutions.
  • Experience in incident investigation, risk assessment and implementing corrective actions. Audit experience would also be valued.
  • Strong organisational skills and experience developing and maintaining WHS systems, processes and documentation.
  • A collaborative and approachable style, with the confidence to build effective relationships across all levels of Council, including frontline employees, managers, contractors and volunteers.
  • Strong digital confidence: Highly comfortable navigating technology and able to quickly learn, navigate and administer systems such as Ideagen EHS.
  • A current driver's licence and willingness to work across office and field‑based environments.

The ideal candidate will bring hands‑on WHS experience from an operational, field‑based, multi‑site or compliance‑focused environment. Local government experience would be highly regarded, although candidates from civil construction, infrastructure, utilities, manufacturing, logistics, facilities, community services, transport or other safety‑critical sectors are also encouraged to apply.
