Job summary

GMB Water in Adelaide is seeking a hands-on WHS Coordinator to lead the next stage of safety improvements across the organisation. You will report to the CEO and drive the ongoing implementation of the WHS Management System with practical, real-world impact.

Qualifications

  • Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety required.
  • Experience in high-risk industries (utilities, construction, energy, mining) preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of WHS legislation and risk management.
  • Experience implementing WHS management systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to present to senior leaders.
  • Proficient in reporting and data analysis.
  • Proactive with ability to drive improvements to completion.

Responsibilities

  • Continuously improve the WHS Management System across the organisation.
  • Collaborate with managers to develop practical safety documents and safe work practices.
  • Support high-risk activities including wastewater treatment and contractor management.
  • Conduct workplace inspections, audits and site walkarounds.
  • Lead incident investigations and corrective actions.
  • Deliver WHS training, inductions and safety initiatives.
  • Manage return to work coordination and compliance.
  • Prepare WHS reporting for executives and Board.
  • Foster a proactive safety culture focused on improvement.

The Opportunity

GMB Water is investing in the future, and with the Board identifying health and safety as a strategic priority, they're creating a brand-new WHS Coordinator position to lead the next stage of their safety journey. Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will provide specialist WHS advice and support across the organisation while leading the ongoing implementation and continuous improvement of GMB Water's WHS Management System. This is a hands-on role with the autonomy to shape how safety is delivered across the organisation and make a lasting impact.

Key Responsibilities
  • Continuous improvement of the WHS Management System across the organisation.
  • Partnering with managers and operational teams to develop practical safety documentation, procedures and safe work practices.
  • Supporting high-risk operational activities including wastewater treatment, confined space work and contractor management.
  • Conducting workplace inspections, audits and contractor site walkarounds.
  • Leading incident investigations, hazard management and corrective actions.
  • Delivering WHS training, inductions and safety initiatives.
  • Managing return to work coordination and legislative compliance.
  • Preparing WHS reporting for the Executive Leadership Team and Board.
  • Driving a proactive, collaborative safety culture focused on continuous improvement rather than policing compliance.
Skills and Experience

You're a practical WHS professional who enjoys building relationships and influencing positive change. You will also bring:

  • Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety
  • Experience within high-risk industries such as Utilities, Construction, Energy, Mining or similar operational environments.
  • Strong knowledge of WHS legislation, risk management and safety systems.
  • Experience implementing and improving WHS management systems.
  • Excellent communication skills with the confidence to present to senior leaders and Board members.
  • Strong computer literacy and reporting capability.
  • The ability to identify opportunities for improvement and independently drive initiatives through to completion.
