Job summary

Motor Trade Association SA/NT is seeking a WHS Advisor to safeguard the safety and wellbeing of staff and apprentices across SA and NT sites. You will lead WHS systems, injury management, emergency preparedness, and safety culture initiatives while engaging with host employers.

You will drive policy development, audits, incident investigations and RTW coordination, reporting to senior management. A Certificate IV WHS and related training are required, with a collaborative, proactive approach

Qualifications

  • Qualified WHS professional with practical knowledge of policy development and compliance.
  • Experience advising on injury management and return-to-work processes.
  • Ability to lead safety culture initiatives and host employer engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain and monitor WHS policies, procedures and systems across sites.
  • Conduct inspections, audits, risk assessments and incident investigations with corrective actions.
  • Provide WHS guidance to staff, apprentices and host employers; oversee safety assessments.
  • Manage Return-to-Work claims and support injured personnel.
  • Coordinate WHS induction, training, and health monitoring activities.
  • Implement and maintain Emergency Management Plan including drills and warden roles.
  • Deliver monthly WHS reporting to Management and Board.

About Us

The Motor Trade Association SA/NT (MTA) is the peak body representing the automotive retail, service and repair industry in South Australia and the Northern Territory. Our 1,300 members span publicly listed vehicle dealerships, through to independent mechanical repair workshops, service stations and automotive dismantlers. Our registered training organisation (RTO) and group training organisation (GTO), MTA Training and Employment, is a trusted leader training more than 1,100 apprentices and directly employing more than 450. About the Role

The WHS Advisor plays a vital role in safeguarding the physical and psychological safety and wellbeing of all personnel across MTA sites. Reporting to the General Counsel and Workplace Relations Manager, this role leads the delivery of WHS systems, injury management, emergency preparedness, and safety culture initiatives across both staff and apprentice populations, including engagement with host employers.

What You Will Do
  • Develop, maintain and monitor WHS policies, procedures and systems, ensuring compliance with legislation and Codes of Practice.
  • Conduct workplace inspections, audits, risk assessments and incident investigations, driving corrective actions and continuous improvement.
  • Provide expert WHS guidance and support to GTO staff, apprentices and host employers, overseeing host employer safety assessments and outcomes.
  • Manage Return-to-Work claims and support injured apprentices and staff through recovery, liaising with medical practitioners and rehabilitation providers.
  • Coordinate WHS induction, training, health monitoring (audiometric, spirometry) and awareness activities across the organisation.
  • Implement and maintain the Emergency Management Plan, including drills, equipment programs and the Chief Warden function.
  • Deliver monthly WHS and RTW reporting to Management and the Board, and champion a positive safety culture across MTA.
What You Will Bring
  • Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Excellent time management, organisation and attention to detail, with the ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated experience in workers compensation claims management and return-to-work coordination.
  • Sound judgement, problem-solving ability and a collaborative team approach.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office and other digital systems.
  • Minimum Certificate IV in Work Health & Safety, Return to Work Coordinator Certificate, Provide First Aid and Chief Warden training.
  • Current Working with Children Check, Police Check, Australian Right to Work, full driver's licence, and RRHAN and "Through their Eyes" training certificates (willingness to obtain).
