Hyundai Rotem Company in Australia is seeking a Welding Engineer to develop and maintain welding procedures, documents and standards for rollingstock carbody assemblies. You will work with site welding teams, JV partners and international design teams to ensure quality, compliance and safe production.
The role requires leading ToT for welding technologies, ensuring ISO 3834, EN 15085 and AWS compliance, and coordinating with safety teams to deliver defect-free, reliable trains on schedule.
Hyundai Rotem Company (HRC) was founded in 1977 and since that time, has been leading the industry globally by delivering critical national infrastructure in over 50 countries. A leader in the Korean rail industry, HRC has succeded in developing high-speed trains and is now establishing their presence in the Australian market.
Currently, the Australian operation of HRC is working on two major projects:
Combined local and international design teams and suppliers will work together to ensure the delivery of manufacturing requirements and associated documentation to ensure that train sets locally manufactured in Australia meet the design, compliance, manufactuability, reliability, maintainability and safety specifications for the trains operational life for a minimum of at least 35 years.
HRC prides itself on hiring people committed to excellence and ensuring state of the art train designs that are focussed on safety, accessibility, reliability and comfort for passengers and operational rail staff that meet all of the latest safety specifications and standards.
Reporting to the Production Engineering Manager, the Welding Engineer develops, implements and maintains standard welding procedures and processes to achieve efficient, defect-free series production and structural integrity of Rollingstock Carbody assemblies.
The Welding Engineer is required to collaborate closely with the site-based production and welding teams, including its joint-venture partner, and overseas engineering design and metallurgy teams to ensure welding plans, WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications), and NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) activities are optimised, welding distortion and risks mitigated, and quality opportunities realised.
The role requires the incumbent to assist in leading the Transfer of Technology (ToT) phase for welding technologies and robotic/manual welding processes of the project, transitioning through to steady-state production. This requires effective communication with multiple stakeholders, and the application of a meticulous can-do attitude to ensure strict compliance with welding standards (such as ISO 3834, EN 15085, or AWS), safety, and structural quality standards.
Work withwelding coordinators in Koreato create and maintain technical welding documentation, includingwelding procedure specifications (WPS),establish and optimize precise welding sequences, modification instructions, weld quality tolerance standards, andNDT (Non-Destructive Testing) protocols.
Troubleshoot welding-related manufacturing issueson the shop floor, including defects such ascracks, porosity, or lack of fusion, and implement corrective actions.
Refine welding parameters, joint designs, or build methodologies(e.g., weld sequence, heat input control) to align with production requirements and quality standards.
Define and validate welding methods, equipment, tooling (e.g., fixtures, clamps), and processesto meetseries production targetsforrailway vehicle components.
Balance the welding production lineby analysingresource allocation, welder skill requirements, and cycle time.
Ensure welding process instructions(e.g., WPS, work instructions) areproduction-ready and compliantwith standards (ISO, AS/NZS, AWS), in collaboration withProduction Engineeringand theZero Harm (safety) team
