About This Opportunity

Join the collaborative team at the UQ VETS Equine Specialist Hospital, where you will provide high-quality nursing and technical services for hospitalised equine patients while supporting the clinical education of veterinary and veterinary technology students. Working alongside veterinarians, veterinary specialists and support colleagues in an advanced clinical environment, you will contribute to exceptional patient care and help create meaningful change for animals, clients and the next generation of veterinary professionals.

As a Day-Position role within our 24-hour facility, you will be exposed to a broad range of cases and have opportunities to develop your skills across multiple specialty areas. Your take-home salary will reflect the specific terms of your roster.

Key Responsibilities Will Include, But Not Limited To
  • Assess, monitor and treat equine patients in intensive care, isolation and hospital wards, while maintaining excellent standards of husbandry and professional nursing care.
  • Provide skilled technical assistance to veterinary specialists and staff, including support for radiography, computed tomography, scintigraphy, magnetic resonance imaging and relevant diagnostic clinical pathology procedures.
  • Maintain specialised instruments and equipment, assist with pharmacy inventory, and deliver responsive administrative, reception and client service support.
  • Provide clinical training and teaching support for veterinary and veterinary technology students, while liaising confidently with veterinarians, specialists, colleagues and clients about patient treatment and care.

UQ VETS Small Animal Hospital boasts the latest veterinary medical and surgical diagnostic and treatment options for small animals, birds, exotic pets and wildlife, as well as a seven-day urgent and emergency care service. UQ staff also supervise clinical placements at the RSPCA’s Brisbane Animal Care Campus, Wacol.

In particular, the UQ VETS Equine Specialist Hospital brings world-leading specialist veterinarians and nurses together to provide outstanding veterinary care for horses. About You
  • A Bachelor of Veterinary Technology, Bachelor of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology, Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or an equivalent qualification, together with relevant nursing experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working reliably as part of a rostered team delivering equine specialist hospital services seven days a week.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide and maintain high standards of professional veterinary nursing and equine patient care.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to work flexibly, exercise initiative and operate with appropriate autonomy.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build productive professional and operational relationships with colleagues, clients and students.
  • Knowledge of the ethical requirements, principles, policies and procedures relevant to veterinary nursing, including workplace health and safety, equity and anti-discrimination obligations.
  • A collaborative approach, enthusiasm for ongoing professional development and an interest in supporting the clinical education of veterinary and veterinary technology students.
  • A current radiation licence, or the ability to apply for one.
