Job summary

Port Authority of New South Wales invites a Vessel Traffic Services Officer to join a team ensuring safe, secure port operations 24/7. The role engages in coordinating vessel movements, monitoring radar, AIS, CCTV, and communications within the Vessel Traffic System.

This is a part-time, maximum 12-month contract (18 hours per week on a rotating shift). Applicants should have maritime experience, a valid driver's licence, willingness to travel between locations, and the ability to obtain

Qualifications

• Maritime environment experience.
• Ability to obtain operator certificates (IALA V-103/1) or higher.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate movement of vessels in and around the port with high situational awareness.
• Operate Vessel Traffic Service equipment: radar, AIS, CCTV, VHF, and related systems.
• Participate in emergency response within and outside the port (spills, fires, search & rescue).
• Coordinate communications between VTS centre, vessels, port users and allied services.

Your opportunity

As a Vessel Traffic Services Officer, your role will be filled with variety and challenge as you help us operate a safe and secure port 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in compliance with our Port Safety Operating Licence. Here’s how your impact will really count:

• You’ll work in a team of 3-4 VTS Operators to coordinate the movement of vessels in and around the port maintaining high situational awareness within the Vessel Traffic System coverage area.
• You’ll operate Vessel Traffic Service equipment and systems such as electronic chart system, radar, AIS, CCTV, telecommunication, and VHF that enable monitoring and management of traffic.
• You’ll participate in emergency response within and outside the port including mooring failures, loss of propulsion, oil and chemical spills, firefighting, and search and rescue.
• You’ll coordinate communication between the Vessel Traffic Service centre, participating vessels, and port users and allied services.

This role is part time (18 hours per week on a rotating shift pattern) maximum term contract for up to 12 months.

What you’ll bring

• Driver’s licence and willingness to travel between locations in the portfolio
• Experience in a maritime environment

We’d also love you to have:

• Ability to obtain and maintain an IALA V-103/1 Operator Certificate or higher qualification
• Certificate of Local Knowledge Sydney
• Ability to monitor, operate and interpret modern radar, AIS, CCTV and communications systems
• Ability to compile detailed written reports for a range of different audiences
• Ability to work in stressful situations while remaining calm and making sound decisions
