The Role:
The Design System Lead will lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of a comprehensive design system that supports our product design and development teams. You’ll play a strategic role in ensuring design consistency and efficiency across digital products while driving best practices for UI design. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including designers, engineers, product managers, and leadership, to create seamless and intuitive experiences for our users. Additionally, you will be responsible for communicating the value and ROI of the design system to stakeholders across the business, ensuring alignment with broader commercial objectives.

The Responsibilities:

Define and create strategic direction for the design system and product design areas.
Guide and support the design system team constructively, energising and increasing their quality of work.
Serve as an example of leadership principles to the entire design team and the broader Digital team.
Own the quality and cohesion of design outputs across all products and teams, flagging concerns to the responsible designers and leaders.
Advocate for best practices and solutions within product and DLS (Design Language System) development.
Diagnose, derive, and lead updates to design processes, governance, and design infrastructure to improve team performance.
Propose and build compelling business cases for new initiatives, advocating for resources, timelines, and alignment with company goals.
Manage the backlog for design system work in collaboration with Product manager and engineering lead, as well as guidance in prioritising tasks based on strategic impact, business needs, and team capacity.
Align roadmap planning with business objectives and drive delivery timelines.
Champion a vertical and horizontal working model that enables seamless collaboration, aligning UX and insights to create customer-centric products that deliver business value.
Lead and mentor cross-functional teams and agencies to create unified, impactful outcomes for customers.
Lead the vision for DLS alongside technology counterparts. Shape the ongoing development and governance of the DLS, ensuring it is well-maintained and relevant for all of Medibank's products.
Communicate the business value of design systems, demonstrating their ROI through enhanced customer experiences, reduced costs, and improved efficiency.
Employ a broad set of design tools, such as Figma, Supernova, and others, to solve user flows, interaction designs, and high-fidelity prototypes across multiple devices and platforms.
Advocate for Lean & Agile design principles, ensuring that design thinking is embedded in cross-functional teams.
Lead workshops, feedback loops, and collaborative problem-solving sessions.
Support of UX & Product Design recruitment, training interviewers, and identifying top talent.
Champion holistic user experience, identifying gaps or challenges across product features and platforms.
Translate complex design concepts to stakeholders and teams from various disciplines.

About You:

At least 8+ years of experience in UI/UX design, with a deep understanding of design systems and UI design principles.
Proven experience leading and mentoring design teams.
Expertise in creating, implementing, and maintaining scalable design systems.
Proficient with modern design tools and plugins such as Figma and Supernova.
Ability to communicate the ROI of design systems and UI design efforts.
Experience aligning design strategies with business goals and demonstrating the business value of design.
Strong collaboration skills to work with product managers, engineers, marketers, and other business stakeholders to ensure design excellence and business alignment.
Strong visual design skills, experience with information architecture, cross-platform design, and interaction design.
Familiarity with front-end development and responsive web/mobile platforms to collaborate effectively with engineering teams.
