Job summary

Focus Structural & Civil in West Gosford NSW is seeking a Trainee Structural Drafter to learn how to turn engineering concepts into clear drawings while building technical skills on real projects from day one.

You don’t need to arrive knowing everything—we’re keen to work with you to get there. You’ll be curious, tech‑savvy and collaborative, with support from our engineering and drafting team as you grow into a confident drafter.

Qualifications

• Developing an understanding of construction methods, structural systems and materials.

Focus Structural & Civil is a Central Coast engineering consultancy built on a pretty simple idea: great engineering starts with great people.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Trainee Structural Drafter who is keen to build a career in structural drafting and learn from an experienced engineering and drafting team.

You don’t need to arrive knowing everything — we’re keen to work with you to get there.

We’re looking for someone who is curious, switched on, comfortable with technology and genuinely interested in how buildings are put together. Working alongside our structural engineers and drafters, you’ll learn how to turn engineering concepts into clear, accurate drawings while building your technical skills, confidence and responsibility on real projects from day one.

Tasks / Duties

• Preparing and coordinating structural drawings and documentation, including plans, sections, details, general arrangement drawings, revisions and updates, with guidance from experienced team members.
• Learning and using industry drafting and modelling software to produce structural drawings and 3D models
• Working with engineers to understand structural designs and how they translate into drawings
• Reviewing architectural and consultant documentation
• Developing an understanding of construction methods, structural systems and materials
• Building your knowledge of drafting standards and our internal systems
• Potentially attending site inspections as your experience grows

Skills & Experience

You might be finishing school, studying, changing careers or simply know that technical drawing and the built environment are where you want to be.

We’re looking for someone with:

• A genuine interest in drafting, design, construction or engineering
• Good computer skills and confidence learning new software
• Strong attention to detail
• An ability to visualise things spatially and understand how components fit together
• A willingness to ask questions and learn
• A positive, reliable and team-focused attitude
• Good organisation and time-management skills
• Previous experience with CAD, Revit or similar design software would be great, but it isn’t essential. We’re much more interested in finding someone with the right attitude and aptitude who we can teach.
