Job description

Some career choices have more impact than others.

At HSBC we exist with the purpose of Opening up a World of Opportunity. We use our unique expertise, capabilities, breadth and perspectives to provide opportunities for our customers and colleagues through global connectivity. We bring together the people, ideas and capital that nurture progress and growth, helping to create a better world – for our customers, our people, our investors, our communities and the planet we all share.

As an HSBC employee in Australia, you’ll have access to tailored professional development opportunities, competitive pay, an embedded flexible working culture and a range of employee benefits. These include market-leading subsidised private health cover, enhanced parental pay and support when returning to work, subsidised banking products and services, bonus leave days and wellness programmes including discounted gym memberships.

The Test Manager will be a key member of the Group Chief Operating Officer (GCOO) Transformation team, accountable for shaping and leading the end-to-end testing approach to ensure solutions are fit for purpose, operationally safe, and compliant with HSBC governance expectations.

Working with stakeholders across Business, Operations, IT, Compliance and third parties, you’ll develop and execute an integrated test strategy and plan, coordinate cross-functional test delivery, manage defects and quality metrics, and provide transparent reporting to programme governance to enable timely, well-controlled releases.

Responsibilities:
  • Identify and articulate testing objectives, success criteria, scope and deliverables; develop clear test plans, schedules, resource requirements and dependencies.
  • Develop and maintain the programme test strategy and integrated test plan, including test phases, environments, data, entry/exit criteria, quality gates and evidence requirements.
  • Oversee multiple concurrent test activities (e.g. system/functional testing where applicable, SIT, end-to-end testing, UAT support, regression, and agreed non-functional testing), ensuring they meet time, quality and governance standards.
  • Proactively manage testing risks, dependencies, issues, environment constraints and test data readiness; escalse material blockers promptly and drive resolution.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders (e.g. Operations, IT, Compliance, business SMEs) to capture requirements, refine test scope, align responsibilities, and maintain alignment with programme priorities.
  • Establish and run effective defect management practices (triage, prioritisation, root-cause themes, retest discipline and closure criteria) and reduce defect leakage into production.
  • Provide regular updates to governance forums, highlighting milestones, test outcomes, quality metrics, key risks and mitigation strategies to ensure transparency and accountability.
  • Integrate HSBC change framework, risk management frameworks and regulatory requirements into test planning and execution; maintain audit-ready test artefacts and approvals.
  • Support readiness and adoption activities linked to test outcomes (e.g. UAT mobilisation, stakeholder engagement, evidence capture), ensuring changes land effectively.
  • Identify and champion opportunities for continuous improvement in test ways of working and tooling (e.g. Agile testing practices, increased standardisation/automation where appropriate).
Requirements:
  • Proven experience delivering projects within banking/financial services, including within an HSBC Group context.
  • Extensive experience delivering large change programmes, including shaping and overseeing end-to-end testing across the delivery lifecycle.
  • Familiarity with core banking processes, products, and relevant regulations.
  • Ability to translate business and regulatory requirements into pragmatic, value-added test coverage (including end-to-end scenarios).
  • Skilled in both Waterfall and Agile methodologies, selecting the right approach based on risk and complexity.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage senior stakeholders across business and technology.
  • Strong communication, negotiation and influencing skills, with the ability to present concise, data-driven insights to varied audiences.
  • Experience embedding risk management and regulatory compliance within delivery and test practices, maintaining defensible evidence and audit-ready artefacts.
  • Strong defect management discipline, with a track record of improving quality outcomes and reducing defect leakage into production.

Preference will be given to candidates who hold Australian PR/Citizenship or New Zealand Citizenship, or who can demonstrate current unrestricted work rights in Australia without limitations.
