Job description

Work directly with the CTO | Emerging Technology | AI | Innovation | Telecommunications

NetComm is looking for a Technology Strategist to join our Technology & Innovation function and work directly with our Chief Technology Officer (CTO).

This isn't a traditional analyst role, and it isn't a conventional Engineering position.

We're looking for someone who is deeply curious about technology, enjoys figuring out how things work and can quickly get their head around a new technology, customer problem or market opportunity.

One week you might be investigating a new wireless technology or chipset. The next you could be analysing an opportunity with a major telecommunications operator, researching a competitor's technology or patents, experimenting with an AI tool, helping invent a new product concept or writing some Python to see whether an idea actually works.

What's changing in technology?

What does it mean for our customers?

Where is the opportunity for NetComm?

Can we create something new?

Is there valuable IP we should protect?

Can we prove the idea quickly?

What you'll do

You’ll work closely with the CTO across technology strategy, innovation, intellectual property and major customer opportunities.

You’ll:

Research emerging technologies and future market opportunities.

Investigate new wireless, networking, semiconductor, AI and adjacent technologies.

Understand competitor products, technology strategies and technology roadmaps.

Analyse problems and opportunities raised by major telecommunications customers.

Help create new product, solution and architecture concepts.

Support rapid prototypes and proof-of-concept projects.

Develop business cases and opportunity assessments.

Prepare technical briefs and customer presentations.

Work with technology vendors, chipset companies, partners and specialist experts.

Use AI, coding, data and automation to investigate ideas faster.

Help identify and develop new intellectual property arising from our technology and innovation activities.

Research patents, prior art and competitor intellectual property to understand where technologies are heading and where opportunities may exist.

Work with the CTO, engineers and patent specialists to turn new technical ideas into documented inventions and potential patent applications.

You’ll also have access to specialists across our wider Engineering organisation when deeper hardware or software expertise is required.

Who we're looking for

You don't need to be an expert in everything.

You need to be someone who enjoys learning about almost anything.

You’ll probably have around 3–6 years of experience in a technology-related role and a technical background in engineering, computer science or a related discipline.

You might currently work in engineering, technology strategy, product, technical consulting, solutions engineering, innovation or another role where you've developed a broad understanding of technology.

We're particularly interested in people who:

Are naturally curious and enjoy investigating unfamiliar technologies.

Can understand complex technical subjects without needing to be the world's expert in them.

Think about both the technology and why a customer might care about it.

Enjoy creating new ideas and solutions rather than only analysing existing ones.

Can turn large amounts of information into a clear recommendation.

Are comfortable starting with an incomplete problem.

Prefer trying something to spending weeks discussing whether it might work.

Enjoy experimenting with AI tools, Python, APIs, data or automation.

Can communicate comfortably with engineers, executives, customers and technology partners.

Are happy moving between a strategic presentation and a hands-on experiment.

Telecommunications experience would be valuable, but it's not essential. We're more interested in finding someone with the right curiosity, technical aptitude and way of thinking.

You don't need previous patent experience either. If you're interested in invention and enjoy understanding what makes a technical idea new and different, we'll help you develop that capability.

Why this role is different

You’ll be joining a deliberately small and fast-moving Technology & Innovation function sitting upstream of our normal product development organisation.

Our focus is:

We investigate technologies and opportunities before NetComm commits significant Product and Engineering resources.

That means you’ll be involved when ideas are still being formed, helping research them, challenge them, build them, demonstrate them and, where appropriate, create and protect new intellectual property around them.

The strongest opportunities will ultimately transition into our Product and Engineering organisations for full product development.

You’ll have significant exposure to the CTO, senior leadership, major telecommunications operators, chipset companies and technology partners, while having the freedom to investigate and experiment with emerging technologies.

It’s a role for someone who wants breadth, autonomy and exposure to what's coming next rather than spending every day working on one small part of an established product.

We believe in the value of a vibrant, diverse and inclusive workforce where our team members feel valued, respected and empowered to be bold, innovative and create strong connections with the world.

We embrace differences and we strongly encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, LGBTQIA+ people and people with disabilities.
