Our client is a leader in DC Power and Motor Solutions, and we are actively looking to recruit a talented Technical Sales Engineer who will drive growth of our expanding DC motor and motion control portfolio with a focus on industrial automation, robotics, and medical device OEMs.
The role is based in Sydney with a core focus on NSW and national reach as opportunities arise. This role blends deep technical knowledge of DC motors, gearmotors, and drive electronics with a consultative sales approach, working directly with customer engineering teams to specify and win custom motion solutions.
The role reports directly to the General Manager - Commercial targeting opportunities Industrial Automation & Robotics (including AGV/AMR and intralogistics), Defence, Medical Devices & Laboratory Equipment, Building Automation, Agriculture, Mining, Rail & Transportation + Specialised Manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Consulting & Custom Solutions
- Technical Scoping: Work with client engineering teams to define mechanical and electrical specifications: torque, speed, voltage, duty cycle, IP rating, and environmental requirements.
- Bespoke Product Design: Partner with internal and OEM engineering teams to configure custom motor solutions (custom shafts, modified windings, integrated encoders, specialised gearheads) for demanding automation, robotics, or medical applications.
- Product Selection: Guide customers through brushed vs brushless DC (BLDC) motor selection, along with matching gearbox, encoder, controller, and mounting selection.
Business Development & Account Management
- Sector Growth: Target and win design wins with industrial automation OEMs, robotics and AGV/AMR manufacturers, defence and medical device companies, with NSW as the primary focus and national reach as opportunities arise.
- Existing Account Management: Manage and grow existing motor and motion control accounts alongside new business development, ensuring continuity of service and identifying upsell opportunities within the current customer base.
- Pipeline Management: Identify and develop opportunities in adjacent high-growth segments such as building automation, laboratory equipment, and specialised industrial machinery.
- Cross-Selling: Identify opportunities to cross-sell broader power portfolio (AC/DC, DC/DC, UPS) into motor and motion control accounts where a value-added power solution is relevant.
- Relationship Building: Build relationships with both procurement and engineering teams to embed our motion solutions into long-term customer product lifecycles.
Commercial & Project Execution
- Tendering & Quoting: Prepare technical proposals, commercial quotes, and formal tender (RFI/RFP) responses, including compliance documentation where required (e.g. medical device standards, machinery safety standards).
- Market Intelligence: Track industry trends, competitor activity, and relevant standards across automation, robotics, and medical device manufacturing in the local market.
- Marketing Collaboration: Work alongside the marketing team to ensure relevant and localised content is created and shared, supporting sector-specific positioning for the motor and motion control portfolio.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Achievement of annual sales and gross margin targets across NSW and national accounts, as set in initial budget.
- Number of new design wins, or conversions from standard product inquiries to custom engineered (value added) solutions.
- Pipeline growth and customer retention across key automation, robotics, and medical device accounts.
Education & Experience
- Qualification: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related technical field (highly preferred). Equivalent trade background with substantial technical sales experience will also be considered.
- Experience: 3–5+ years in technical sales or applications engineering, specifically with rotating electrical machines, DC motors, or motion control products.
- Industry Exposure: Experience selling into industrial automation, robotics, medical device, or laboratory equipment OEMs is highly advantageous.
- Technical & Personal Skills
- Engineering Knowledge: Strong understanding of DC motor theory (brushed/BLDC), gearboxes, feedback systems (encoders), and motor/motion controllers.
- Commercial Acumen: Strong negotiation, presentation, and relationship-management skills.
- Autonomy: Self-motivated and capable of managing an independent call and client visitation schedule.
