Job summary

Statewide – SA Pathology is seeking a Technical Officer to join the Food and Environmental Laboratory. You will support delivery of high-quality diagnostic services, handling specimens, processing with automated and manual techniques, and reporting results within established procedures.

You will contribute as part of a collaborative team, using your knowledge to ensure accuracy, efficiency and service while aligning with Work Health and Safety standards in a public health setting.

Qualifications

  • Qualified and technically capable, with a Diploma or Advanced Diploma in an approved qualification and knowledge of laboratory principles.
  • Organised and reliable, able to work under limited supervision, follow instructions and manage variable workloads accurately.
  • Collaborative and service-focused with good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with customers and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine laboratory activities including specimen reception and processing of diagnostic samples.
  • Operate automated and manual techniques, evaluate results, process data and dispatch specimens to clients.
  • Maintain supplies, support workflow, and communicate with staff and health professionals as required.

About the role

As a Technical Officer within the Food and Environmental Laboratory, you will play an important role in supporting the delivery of high-quality diagnostic laboratory services that contribute to the health and wellbeing of the community. Working as part of a skilled and collaborative team, you will undertake a range of routine laboratory activities including specimen reception, processing diagnostic samples using both automated and manual techniques, preliminary evaluation and reporting of results, data processing, specimen dispatch and maintaining laboratory supplies. You will work closely with colleagues across SA Pathology, applying your technical knowledge, experience and skills to established practices and procedures while ensuring a high standard of accuracy, efficiency and service.

This is an opportunity to build on your technical expertise while contributing to a supportive and purposeful laboratory environment. At TGO 1 level, you will work both independently and as part of a team, using your knowledge and experience to undertake a broad range of technical activities and contribute to technical projects. You will collaborate with laboratory and medical staff, supervisors and external clients, communicating professionally about specimens, testing and results and providing information to authorised health professionals when required. About You

You will bring a practical laboratory focus, a commitment to quality and a collaborative approach to this role. We are looking for someone who can work confidently within established procedures while using initiative, sound judgement and strong communication skills to deliver reliable outcomes.

  • Qualified and technically capable, with a Diploma or Advanced Diploma in an approved and recognised qualification, supported by knowledge of laboratory principles, science and laboratory practice.
  • Organised and reliable, with the ability to work under limited supervision, follow instructions, prioritise competing tasks and complete variable workloads accurately and within defined timeframes.
  • Collaborative and service-focused, with general laboratory experience, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and work positively within a team and with customers.
  • Professional and adaptable, with good numerical, keyboard and computer skills, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and the ability to handle confidential information while maintaining a strong commitment to Work Health and Safety.
