Job summary

Betashares is seeking a Technical Lead to head a small engineering squad building and operating our Betashares Direct platform services. You will guide design, ensure reliability, and ship scalable AWS/Kubernetes backed systems.

You'll work hands-on while mentoring 4–6 engineers, partnering with product and operations to deliver on an ambitious roadmap with a focus on security, observability and production readiness.

The successful candidate will work with the Betashares Direct core platform team to build our innovative pipeline of products and services across investing and superannuation. You will also improve existing software across our trading, cash management, corporate action, portfolio investing, and user management functions, including managing the deployment and cloud infrastructure of these services. The candidate will work alongside the broader engineering, operations, and product teams to architect and implement new backend services to support our ambitious roadmap of new features, with a focus on creating reliable, scalable, and secure systems.

The Technical Lead is a hands‑on technical leadership role responsible for leading the delivery of a team of 4–6 engineers. The role focuses on technical direction, delivery quality, service ownership and helping the team make sound engineering decisions. The team owns multiple services in an AWS and Kubernetes environment. You will work closely with engineers and relevant stakeholders to turn priorities into well‑designed, reliable and operable technical outcomes, while strengthening engineering practices across the services the team owns.

Role Responsibilities

• Lead the technical delivery of a team of 4–6 engineers, setting direction and aligning engineering work to agreed outcomes.
• Provide hands‑on technical contribution across the design, build, review and improvement of production services.
• Guide technical decisions across multiple services, balancing scalability, reliability, maintainability and delivery trade‑offs.
• Own and improve engineering practices across AWS and Kubernetes environments, including deployment, observability and operational readiness.
• Help the team plan and sequence technical work, identifying dependencies, risks and service‑level impacts.
• Support engineers through technical coaching, design feedback and code review.
• Maintain high standards for code quality, testing, documentation and production support.
• Drive continuous improvement across the services the team owns by addressing recurring technical, operational and delivery issues.

Key skills and experience

Must-haves

• Demonstrated experience leading technical delivery for a software engineering team.
• Hands‑on experience designing, building and operating software in AWS.
• Strong practical experience with Kubernetes in production environments.
• Strong software engineering capability, including system design, code review, testing and production operations.
• Experience owning or supporting multiple production services, including reliability, observability and maintainability.
• Ability to make sound technical trade‑offs and communicate decisions clearly with engineers and stakeholders.

Nice-to-have experience:

• Developed production services in Rust.
• Engineered agentic AI systems or AI‑enabled software products.
• Worked in financial services or similarly regulated, high‑reliability environments.
• Line management experience.
