At WorkSafe Victoria, we're working towards making Victoria a global leader in workplace safety and wellbeing. We're looking for people from a wide range of industries who are passionate about protecting others and creating safer workplaces.

This is an opportunity to use your industry knowledge, problem-solving skills and professional experience to make a lasting impact across Victorian workplaces.

About the Opportunity

You will spend a large part of your time visiting and inspecting workplaces in the mining, quarrying and minerals exploration industries across the State of Victoria. As a Technical Subject Matter Expert (TSME) you will conduct scheduled inspections in accordance with oversight plans and participate in and lead annual verification inspections. During an inspection, you will gauge the level of compliance with legislative requirements and take appropriate action, which may range from the provision of information to the imposing of enforcement measures.

As a WorkSafe Inspector, you'll complete a training program designed to equip you with the skills, knowledge and confidence to succeed in a regulatory environment.

Once appointed, you'll spend much of your time visiting workplaces, assessing workplace safety, investigating concerns and helping organisations meet their legal obligations.

No two days are the same. You will:

  • Inspect workplaces and assess compliance with occupational health and safety legislation
  • Investigate incidents, hazards and safety concerns
  • Provide practical advice and guidance to employers and workers
  • Influence positive workplace safety outcomes
  • Build productive relationships with stakeholders

  • Working knowledge of the Earth Resources industry, including national/industry standards and compliance codes.
  • A systems-thinking approach through experience and/or application

  • The ability to assess situations and make sound decisions under pressure
  • Excellent influencing, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to interpret and apply legislation, standards or technical information
  • Confidence using technology and computer systems
  • Qualifications in occupational health and safety, compliance, a trade, technical discipline or relevant industry experience are desirable but not essential
