Job summary

WorkSafe Victoria is seeking an Inspector to visit workplaces, assess compliance with OH&S laws, and investigate concerns, providing practical guidance to employers and workers.

You will undertake a 16-week induction, support a broad range of industries, and contribute to safer Victorian workplaces while building strong stakeholder relationships.

About the Opportunity

As a WorkSafe Inspector, you'll complete a training program designed to equip you with the skills, knowledge and confidence to succeed in a regulatory environment.

Once appointed, you'll spend much of your time visiting workplaces across a variety of industries, assessing workplace safety, investigating concerns and helping organisations meet their legal obligations.

No two days are the same. You will:

  • Inspect workplaces and assess compliance with occupational health and safety legislation
  • Investigate incidents, hazards and safety concerns
  • Provide practical advice and guidance to employers and workers
  • Influence positive workplace safety outcomes
  • Build productive relationships with stakeholders
  • Take appropriate regulatory action when required
  • Contribute to safer workplaces across Victoria

This is a role for people who enjoy solving problems, engaging with others and making informed decisions that help protect workers and the community.

About You

Our Inspectors come from diverse professional backgrounds but share a common goal: ensuring every worker returns home safely at the end of the day.

You will ideally bring:

  • Industry experience from any sector, including trades, manufacturing, transport, logistics, healthcare, construction, agriculture, government, engineering, safety or related fields
  • A systems-thinking approach through experience and/or application
  • Strong critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • The ability to assess situations and make sound decisions under pressure
  • Excellent influencing, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to interpret and apply legislation, standards or technical information
  • Confidence using technology and computer systems
  • Qualifications in occupational health and safety, compliance, a trade, technical discipline or relevant industry experience are desirable but not essential

Most importantly, you'll be passionate about making a positive difference and committed to improving workplace safety outcomes.

Recruitment & Training Process

We invest heavily in developing our Inspectors through a structured recruitment and onboarding experience.

Indicative Recruitment Timeline:
  • Applications Close: Monday 14th September at 11:00pm
  • Online Video Interviews, Cognitive & Psychometric Assessments: Late September
  • Panel Interviews: October/November
  • Police, Reference & Medical Checks: November/December
  • Offers & Contracts: December
  • Employment Commencement: February
  • 16-Week Paid Induction Program: Monday 8th February

Successful applicants will also be required to enrol in a Diploma of Government as part of their development.

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered, applicants must:

  • Hold a valid, unrestricted Victorian Driver's Licence
  • Be available for all recruitment activities and training dates
  • Successfully complete National Criminal History, Reference and Medical Checks
  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or hold permanent residency

Please note, induction training will involve attendance at our Essendon Fields office three days per week and your local office two days per week throughout the 16-week program.
