Job summary

Mott MacDonald is seeking a Technical Director - Flooding and Water Resources in Queensland to lead complex water projects across Australia. You will shape outcomes, provide trusted technical advice, mentor engineers and develop client relationships while guiding team growth.

This senior role combines technical excellence with strategic input, active stakeholder engagement and growth of our hydrology, hydraulics, stormwater and flood risk capabilities within a global consultancy.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering or similar.
  • Experience in hydrology, hydraulics, flood modelling, stormwater and water resources in consultancy or infra.
  • Experience leading complex technical projects with governance.
  • Experience with modelling tools such as TUFLOW, HEC-RAS, RORB, RAFTS, WBNM.
  • Knowledge of Australian rainfall, flood estimation, flood risk management and standards.
  • Experience influencing clients and senior stakeholders and supporting work winning.
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor engineers.
  • RPEQ and/or Chartered status or eligibility is highly regarded.

Our Opportunity

We’re seeking a Technical Director - Flooding and Water Resources to provide technical leadership, strategic direction and senior project oversight across a growing portfolio of complex water resources, flood modelling and infrastructure projects in Queensland and across Australia.

This is a senior opportunity for an experienced flooding and water resources professional who can shape project outcomes, provide trusted technical advice, develop client relationships and support the growth of our capability across hydrology, hydraulics, stormwater and flood risk management. You’ll play a key role in leading technically challenging work across major transport, civil infrastructure, energy and development projects, while helping to mentor and develop engineers across the team.

As part of an international consultancy, you’ll be connected to a global professional community, with opportunities to collaborate with specialists worldwide, influence best practice and contribute to projects locally, nationally and internationally. This role is suited to someone who enjoys combining technical excellence with people leadership, client engagement and strategic input into the growth of a high-performing water resources practice.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Providing senior technical leadership across flooding, hydrology, hydraulics, stormwater and water resources projects.
  • Leading technical delivery, review and governance for complex flood modelling, drainage, flood risk and water resources assessments.
  • Acting as a trusted advisor to clients, authorities and project partners, bringing strategic insight and sound technical judgement to project challenges.
  • Overseeing multidisciplinary project teams to ensure designs and technical outputs are practical, buildable, compliant and aligned with client requirements.
  • Preparing, reviewing and approving technical reports, design documentation, modelling outputs, tender inputs and approval submissions.
  • Driving quality, risk management and commercial outcomes across projects, including programme, scope and resource coordination.
  • Mentoring and developing engineers, supporting technical capability growth and contributing to succession planning within the team.
  • Supporting work winning, client development and strategic growth opportunities across the flooding and water resources market.
About You

You’ll be an established senior professional with deep technical expertise in flooding and water resources, combined with the commercial awareness, client focus and leadership capability expected. You will have:

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering or similar.
  • Significant experience in hydrology, hydraulics, flood modelling, stormwater management and water resources engineering within a consultancy or infrastructure environment.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex technical projects and providing senior review, assurance and technical governance.
  • Strong capability using or overseeing modelling tools such as TUFLOW, HEC-RAS, RORB, RAFTS, WBNM or similar.
  • A strong understanding of Australian rainfall and flood estimation practices, flood risk management, drainage standards and authority requirements.
  • Experience influencing clients, managing senior stakeholder relationships and supporting work winning or proposal development.
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor and develop technical professionals across different career stages.
  • RPEQ and/or Chartered status, or eligibility to obtain, will be highly regarded.
