Job summary

Cancer Council NSW in Sydney seeks a Team Leader for Financial Counselling to oversee the day-to-day delivery of Financial Support Services. You will coach staff, manage client referrals, and provide direct financial counselling support to empower people affected by cancer to make informed decisions.

The role is open to part-time or full-time applicants for a 15-month contract, based at Woolloomooloo head office, with commencement as soon as possible.

Qualifications

• Accredited Financial Counsellor with 3–5+ years' experience in the financial counselling sector.
• Experience leading Financial Counsellors or Navigators to deliver high-quality client outcomes.
• Strong knowledge of the NSW financial counselling landscape and established networks.
• Experience overseeing complex financial counselling cases and client support.
• Proven interpersonal, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a team of Financial Counsellors and Financial Navigators.
• Oversee referral management and delivery of Financial Navigation, Counselling, and Financial Assistance services.
• Provide direct support to clients through a small caseload and casework as required.
• Escalate complex client matters and high-distress cases when needed.
• Ensure holistic client support through appropriate referrals to legal, planning, transport, and housing services.

About the team

This is a role in the Practical, Legal and Financial Support Services team within the Cancer Information & Support Services Division and would be internally referred to as 'Team Leader, Financial Support Services'. The role reports to the Lead, Legal & Financial Support Services. This team provides support to people affected by cancer, ensuring practical needs are met throughout their cancer trajectory. The services offered include:

• Financial support in the form of financial capability work, financial counselling, financial planning, and emergency financial grants to assist with everyday expenses,
• Legal and workplace support with issues arising from a cancer diagnosis, treatment or caring responsibilities; and
• Practical support such as accommodation and transport services during cancer treatment.

About the role:

The Team Leader, Financial Counselling will oversee the day-to-day delivery of CCNSW’s suite of Financial Support Services. This role is also responsible for direct people management of staff delivering these services to provide holistic telephone-based information and support to empower people affected by cancer make informed financial decisions to alleviate and prevent financial hardship.

This role is open to part-time or full-time applicants (minimum of 4 days required) for a 15-month contract, until Dec 2027 with the possibility of extension. The role is based in our Woolloomooloo head office. The role will commence as soon as possible, and applications will be reviewed as they are received.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

• Lead, coach, and develop a team of Financial Counsellors and Financial Navigators, fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture.
• Oversee referral management and the delivery of Financial Navigation, Financial Counselling, and Financial Assistance services.
• Provide direct support to clients through a small financial counselling caseload and financial navigation casework as required.
• Act as the primary escalation point for complex client matters, eligibility decisions, stakeholder issues, and high-distress cases.
• Ensure clients receive holistic support through appropriate referrals to legal, financial planning, transport, accommodation, and other support services.
• Drive service quality, compliance, and continuous improvement to enhance client outcomes, efficiency, and adherence to industry standards.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with internal teams, community partners, and industry stakeholders, while promoting Financial Support Services.
• Support strategic planning, reporting, budgeting, and operational management of Financial Support Services, while maintaining WHS compliance.

About you

• Accredited Financial Counsellor with 3–5+ years’ experience in the financial counselling sector.
• Proven leadership experience managing Financial Counsellors and/or Financial Capability Workers to deliver high-quality client outcomes.
• Strong knowledge of the NSW financial counselling landscape, with established industry networks and stakeholder relationships.
• Demonstrated expertise providing and overseeing complex financial counselling cases and client support.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, relationship management, presentation, and networking skills.
• Sound judgement with the ability to balance client-centred service delivery with organisational priorities and strategic objectives.
• Experience developing policies, procedures, and continuous improvement initiatives, with strong technology skills and experience using case management systems.
• Qualifications or accreditation in financial counselling supervision, mentoring, or leadership, with experience supporting staff development.
• Understanding of the needs of people affected by cancer and experience working within not-for-profit, community, health, or related service environments.
• Strong capability in using, training, and supporting others on Microsoft Dynamics or similar case management systems.
