Job summary

Taungurung Land and Water Council and Parks Victoria seek Taungurung Parks Rangers to care for Taungurung country, using both cultural and western land management knowledge to keep people safe and share knowledge. The role includes working on Taungurung Country such as Kinglake, Lake Eildon, and Cathedral Ranges, with field and office duties.

Qualifications

• A strong interest in land management, conservation, and Taungurung Culture.
• A current Victorian driver’s licence [a probationary licence is acceptable].
• Ability to obtain an Employee Working with Children Check.
• Willingness to undertake a National Police check.

Responsibilities

• Manage Country in partnership with TLaWC and Parks Victoria.
• Deliver culturally-informed and park management duties including weed control and campground maintenance.
• Interact with visitors and participate in land management projects.

About the role

We are looking for Taungurung people to join the Taungurung Parks Ranger team and work alongside Parks Victoria, using both cultural and western land management knowledge and practices to heal and care for country, keeping people safe and sharing knowledge so everyone can enjoy and care for Taungurung country.

Taungurung Parks Rangers care for Aboriginal-title parks, including Kinglake National Park, Lake Eildon National Park, and Cathedral Ranges State Park, as well as other parks and reserves on Taungurung Country, such as Horseshoe Lagoon and Gooram Falls.

The Taungurung Parks Ranger team deliver a range of field and office-based park management duties including participating in culturally-informed land management projects, delivering park management such as weed control, campground maintenance, and interacting with visitors.

• The role is offered as full time, but flexible working arrangements are possible
• The role offers all learning and development necessary for the position, including a Certificate III in Conservation and Ecological Management, qualifications in skills including 4WD and First Aid, and cultural knowledge training with Taungurung elders
• A full uniform and mobile phone will be available to the successful rangers
• The role includes working on some weekend and public holidays
• The role is based in Alexandra, and housing assistance for Taungurung community members may be available through TLaWC’s Bringing the Mob Home program (see website for details)

Taungurung Designated Aboriginal position

Through the Recognition and Settlement Agreement the State of Victoria entered into a Traditional Owner Land Management Agreement with the Taungurung Land and Waters Council (TLaWC) over ‘Aboriginal Title’ lands, to establish an equitable partnership that includes funding for the employment of rangers.

The Taungurung Parks Ranger Program seeks to establish a culturally informed framework for Taungurung people to thrive in employment on Taungurung Aboriginal Title land and Parks Victoria managed parks and reserves on Taungurung Country, undertaking culturally informed works supported by and in partnership with Parks Victoria.

The Taungurung Parks Rangers will be employed by TLaWC, then seconded to Parks Victoria. This is a unique partnership which enables rangers to develop their capacity, build relationships, and care for country supported by both Parks Victoria and TLaWC.

This is a designated Aboriginal position under “special measures” section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.
