Job summary

IAG Defence & National Security in Canberra is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to help establish a new technical standards office for Army, acting as the technical authority for a US-origin sensor interoperability data standard across Land domain tactical networks. The Role

We're looking for an experienced Systems Engineer to help establish a new technical standards office for Army, acting as the technical authority for a US-origin sensor interoperability data standard being introduced across Land domain tactical networks. Reporting to the SO2 for Modelling and Standards, you'll hold delegated technical authority over the prototyping activity for this new capability.

You’ll engage external technical and engineering stakeholders on strategic direction, oversee governance alignment across a new set of product lines, and support fortnightly and monthly reporting up to Director and Army Minors project team level. Given the US-origin nature of the standard, demonstrated ability to comply with ITAR requirements around handling, storage, access and disclosure is essential.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain the Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) and Test and Evaluation Master Plan (TEMP) for the prototyping activity
• Run requirements, design and test readiness reviews for the prototyping activity
• Engage external technical and engineering stakeholders on strategic direction and outcomes
• Oversee engineering process and governance alignment across the new office’s product lines
• Support the project manager with reports and presentations
• Prepare fortnightly status reports to the Director and monthly SITREPs to the Army Minors project team
• Identify and elevate technical risk to the SO2 Modelling and Standards
• Undertake other reasonable tasking from the SO2 or LNIC Executive Staff

Required

• Current NV1 security clearance (may be required to upgrade to NV2)
• Postgraduate Systems Engineering qualifications with significant professional experience in Computer Science, Software, Computer or Electronic Engineering, OR minimum 15 years' industry Project Management experience (preferably ICT) plus a relevant 4-year+ engineering degree suitable for Institution of Engineers membership
• Suitable skills, qualifications and experience to hold Design Authority as issued by the Chief Engineer
• Demonstrated experience directly relevant to systems engineering, preferably in a military C4 environment
• Ability to hold and exercise design authority where assigned
• Willingness to complete mandatory Defence/role‑specific training
• Demonstrated ability to comply with US ITAR requirements around handling, storage, access, transfer and disclosure of controlled items
• Chartered Engineer status within the Institution of Engineers highly regarded
• 10+ years' experience in design, build and test (V&V) of C4I military systems, networks and associated software highly regarded
• Experience in safety‑critical software or systems development processes highly regarded
• Experience providing strategic, high‑level advice to senior technical/executive staff on technical, design and risk matters highly regarded
• Knowledge of computing, telecommunications and data storage systems protocols and standards highly regarded
• Extensive experience performing similar duties within Defence, Government or industry highly regarded
• Strong stakeholder engagement, leadership, communication and problem‑solving skills highly regarded
• Experience working in complex, multi‑disciplinary teams delivering capability outcomes highly regarded

Salary

$185,000 - $190,000 (Package incl. Super)

Engagement Details

• Full-time onsite — limited case‑by‑case work‑from‑home only
• Contract period: 2 November 2026 to 30 June 2028
• Extension option: extension possible
