Job summary

Department of Treasury and Finance VIC in Melbourne seeks a budget and finance analyst to deliver high‑quality financial and performance advice to government. The role analyses budget submissions, finance issues and performance reporting to inform resource allocation.

Key duties include updating and reporting in Excel, supporting project delivery, and contributing to policy oversight for value for money and better outcomes for Victorians.

Qualifications

• Ability to conduct analysis and provide advice on complex issues.
• Strong analytical skills, and experience in budgeting, financial accounting and reporting including an understanding of government's key fiscal aggregates and the impact of transactions thereon.
• Demonstrated experience at being able to clearly and concisely present written information and data to highlight options or alternatives and recommendations for decision makers including good computer literacy skills particularly with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
• Experience and/or expertise in portfolio issues across government such as health, human services, justice, education, transport, economic development and environment would be viewed favourably.
• A relevant economic, accounting or finance qualification would be highly regarded.

Responsibilities

• Applying knowledge of policy, accounting and finance to provide advice on financial impacts of government decisions by undertaking analysis and interpreting financial statements to identify financial impacts.
• Use financial management systems and Microsoft Excel (including pivot table function) to update, consolidate, report and analyse monthly, quarterly, mid-year and annual budget and actual financial information and preparation of commentary for reporting purposes.
• Coordination and delivery of projects, including allocating agreed tasks, monitoring progress and supporting delivery against timelines. This will include working with direct team members or other teams across PA, the Division and the Department.
• Supporting and contributing to Departmental goals, demonstrate organisational values and behaviours, and a commitment to personal and professional development.
