Job summary

Metro Trains Melbourne is seeking a motivated STM Mechanical for our Kananook Depot to perform maintenance, servicing and repair across the train fleet, ensuring safe and reliable operation of Melbourne's rail network.

You will join a safety-driven team, work rotating shifts including weekends, and contribute to a strong safety culture while maintaining fleet equipment at a leading public transport operator.

Qualifications

  • AQF Certificate III in Engineering (Mechanical Trade) MEM30219 (mandatory).
  • Experience in mechanical maintenance, fault finding and repair in industrial, manufacturing, or transport environments.
  • Strong commitment to safety and quality in safety-critical workplaces.
  • Ability to inspect, maintain and overhaul mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, including weekends and public holidays.
  • Current Driver's Licence (essential).

Responsibilities

  • Follow all relevant safety procedures and contribute to a strong safety culture.
  • Carry out train examinations and inspections per maintenance requirements.
  • Perform train modifications as required.
  • Service and maintain fleet rotating machinery and related equipment.
  • Inspect, maintain and repair fleet air and brake systems, couplers and electrical gear for safe operation.
  • Maintain a clean, safe depot work environment.
  • Record and report maintenance activities accurately.
  • Replace and overhaul major fleet components as required.
  • Participate in multi-skilled training and undertake tasks you are trained for.
  • Respond to operational incidents as required.
  • Maintain records of all maintenance activities.

We're looking for a motivated STM Mechanical to join our Kananook Depot team in a permanent, full-time role.

About the Role

In this role, you'll undertake a variety of mechanical maintenance, servicing and repair activities across Metro's train fleet, contributing to the safe, reliable and efficient operation of Melbourne's rail network.

Key Responsibilities
  • Follow all relevant safety procedures and contribute to a strong safety culture.
  • Carry out train examinations and inspections in accordance with maintenance requirements.
  • Perform train modifications as required.
  • Service and maintain fleet rotating machinery and associated equipment.
  • Inspect, maintain and repair fleet air and brake systems, couplers and associated electrical equipment to ensure safe and reliable fleet operation.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised depot work environment.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with Metro's Quality Management System.
  • Replace and overhaul major fleet components as required.
  • Participate in multi-skilled training and undertake tasks for which you are trained and deemed competent.
  • Respond to operational incidents, including derailments, collisions, pantograph entanglements, fatalities and other train-related incidents as required.
  • Accurately record and report all maintenance activities and work performed.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Mandatory
  • AQF Certificate III in Engineering (Mechanical Trade) MEM30219
  • Experience in mechanical maintenance, fault finding and repair within an industrial, manufacturing, transport or similar environment.
  • Strong commitment to safety and quality in a safety-critical workplace.
  • Ability to inspect, maintain and overhaul mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, including weekends and public holidays as required.
  • Current Driver's Licence.
Desirable
  • Experience in the rail, rolling stock, transport, manufacturing or heavy maintenance industries.
  • Knowledge of air brake systems, rotating machinery and fleet equipment maintenance.
  • Experience working within a Quality Management System and responding to operational incidents.
