Job summary

CommBank is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for Payments Technology, based in Sydney or Melbourne. You will provide technical leadership, influence engineering strategy across squads, and mentor engineers to build resilient, scalable payment platforms used by millions of customers.

You will work with Node.js/TypeScript, cloud-native architectures and modern delivery practices, partnering with Product, Security and Operations to deliver reliable payment experiences across Australia.

Qualifications

• Experience with Node.js and TypeScript for backend development.
• Experience building APIs, microservices and distributed applications.
• Designing scalable, high-performance backend systems.
• Cloud-native engineering and platform technologies such as AWS, Kubernetes, IaC.
• CI/CD and modern software delivery practices.
• Experience designing and operating modern software platforms including event-driven architectures and messaging.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership across squads, setting engineering direction and standards.
• Design, build and evolve secure, scalable software platforms.
• Lead architecture and design decisions for complex distributed systems.
• Drive modernization initiatives using cloud-native architectures.
• Champion engineering quality, testing, observability and security.
• Mentor engineers and grow technical capability across teams.
