Job summary

Commonwealth Bank is seeking a Staff Software Engineer in Payments Technology (Typescript/Node.js) to lead across squads in Sydney or Melbourne. You will design secure, scalable platforms and drive modernisation using cloud-native and event-driven architectures.

You will mentor engineers, set engineering standards, and collaborate closely with Product, Architecture, Security and Operations to deliver impactful customer outcomes. Strong leadership and hands-on expertise are essential.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in Node.js/TypeScript backend development.
• Proven ability to lead technical direction across teams.
• Designing scalable, resilient distributed systems.
• Experience with cloud-native platforms and IaC.
• Familiarity with event-driven architectures and Kafka.
• Strong collaboration with product, architecture and security teams.

The Payments Data Crew designs and delivers modern data products, APIs and platforms that power payment experiences across the bank. We provide trusted, high-quality payments data through scalable engineering solutions, enabling better customer outcomes, operational excellence and data-driven decision making.

What you'll do

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will:

What we're looking for

We're looking for experienced software engineers who enjoy solving difficult technical problems and influencing engineering beyond their immediate team.

You don't need experience across every technology we use. We're interested in engineers who bring deep expertise in several areas and are excited to learn the rest.

Software Engineering

Experience with several of the following:

• Node.js and TypeScript for backend development
• Building APIs, microservices and distributed applications
• Designing scalable, high-performance backend systems

Experience with cloud-native engineering and platform technologies such as:

• AWS (including services such as EKS, ECS, Lambda, Aurora PostgreSQL, S3 and CloudWatch)
• Kubernetes and containerised applications
• Infrastructure as Code using Terraform or CloudFormation
• CI/CD and modern software delivery practices

Experience designing and operating modern software platforms including:

• Event-driven architectures
• Kafka or similar messaging platforms
• Microservices and distributed systems
• Scalability, resilience and performance optimisation

Technical Leadership

You'll ideally bring experience in:

• Leading technical direction across multiple teams or initiatives
• Architecture and solution design
• Coaching and mentoring engineers
• Driving engineering standards, quality and best practices
• Taking ownership of software across its full lifecycle with a DevSecOps mindset
• Collaborating effectively across engineering, product and architecture teams
