Job summary

LEAP is seeking a Software Engineer for the Matter Issues team, focused on building risk-aware AI tools for legal professionals. You’ll work across the full stack, from API design to production-ready UX, delivering scalable AI-powered features for LEAP’s ecosystem.

You’ll join a fast-moving AI venture within a leading LegalTech company, operating with a startup mindset but backed by enterprise resources. Flexible hybrid arrangements are available, ideally based in Sydney.

Qualifications

• 3–6 years of professional experience as a full-stack engineer.
• Proficiency with JavaScript/TypeScript, React and Node.js.
• Strong understanding of APIs, backend development and databases.

Responsibilities

• Build core features and APIs for our AI-enabled risk management platform.
• Design and deliver production-quality backend services and frontend experiences.
• Collaborate on architectural decisions and lift the overall technical direction.
• Work end-to-end on features from idea to release, in a startup-like environment backed by an enterprise.

Meet the Matter Issues team

A fast-moving AI venture operating inside the world's leading LegalTech organisation. Working at the intersection of automation, agentic AI reasoning, and legal domain intelligence, you'll help engineer therisk-aware legal brainthat powers LEAP's emerging agentic AI ecosystem - including the AI Free Thinking Paralegal.

What you'll do

As a Software Engineer on the Matter Issues team, you'll work across the full stack and the full product lifecycle - designing, building, and refining the systems that will power risk-aware AI inside law firms around the world.

To make this happen, you will:

Build the next generation of legal intelligence

• Develop core features and APIs for our AI risk management platform.
• Model, structure, and deliver risk insights that feed into AI systems via MCP.
• Integrate with LEAP's AI ecosystem, including the Free Thinking Paralegal and Matter AI.

Design and deliver production-quality systems

• Build scalable, resilient backend services and polished frontend experiences.
• Contribute to architectural decisions and technical direction.
• Ensure high reliability, observability, and performance.

Push the boundaries of applied AI

• Prototype and refine AI-driven features that leverage LLMs effectively.
• Work with the constraints and strengths of generative AI in real-world systems.
• Help enable proactive, risk-aware behaviour inside LEAP's AI products.

Work like a start-up, backed by an enterprise

• Own features end-to-end - from idea to release.
• Collaborate closely with the Matter Issues team in a low-bureaucracy environment.
• Contribute to a product with real user impact from day one.

What you'll bring

• 3-6 years of professional experience as a full-stack engineer.
• Proficiency withJavaScript/TypeScript, React, and Node.js.
• Strong understanding of APIs, backend development, and databases.
• Clear and thoughtful communication skills.

Nice to Have

• Experience with AI/LLMs, automation workflows, or agent systems.
• Exposure to Legal Tech, SaaS products, or early-stage tech teams.
• Interest in LLM prompt engineering or applied AI reliability.
