Intaxio is an Australian technology company building compliance infrastructure for payroll, workforce and HR software.

We turn complex Australian regulatory requirements — including Modern Awards, tax, superannuation and ATO reporting — into secure, machine-readable APIs and developer services.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Software Engineer to join our Canberra engineering team in a full-time, permanent role. The salary is Award based with a total remuneration package of $125,000 including superannuation.

This is a hands-on engineering position for someone who is comfortable working across backend APIs, cloud infrastructure and web applications, with most of the engineering depth focused on serverless backend systems and integrations.

You will work closely with engineering, product and compliance specialists to turn complex regulatory and product requirements into reliable production software.

This is not a role where architecture is separated from implementation. You will be expected to make sound technical decisions and then help build, test, deploy and operate the resulting software.

Key Responsibilities

You will contribute across the Intaxio platform, including:

Software Development & Architecture

• Research, analyse and evaluate business and system requirements to design and develop scalable, secure and reliable software solutions.
• Design, develop, maintain and enhance production APIs, backend services and application components in accordance with technical specifications and development standards.
• Design and maintain RESTful APIs, JSON schemas and OpenAPI specifications for reliable communication between internal and external systems.
• Contribute to software architecture and implementation decisions, including evaluating technical approaches, identifying technology limitations and recommending appropriate solutions.
• Write, review and maintain high-quality program code in accordance with system designs, technical specifications and software engineering best practices.
• Identify limitations, deficiencies and technical risks within existing applications and development processes and implement appropriate improvements.
• Develop and maintain serverless and event-driven applications using AWS services including Lambda, API Gateway, EventBridge, DynamoDB, S3, Cognito and Secrets Manager.
• Design and implement secure, multi-tenant application services, including authentication, authorisation and technical security controls.
• Develop and maintain tools and processes that support software development, application management, deployment, monitoring and security.
• Identify, assess and mitigate risks affecting the performance, availability, security and integrity of software throughout the product lifecycle.

Front-End Development

• Develop and maintain customer-facing and administration interfaces using Angular.
• Integrate front-end applications with backend APIs and services.
• Contribute to maintaining application usability, functionality, reliability and maintainability.

Integration & API Development

• Research, design and implement integrations with external platforms and government services.
• Work with modern and legacy integration protocols, including REST, XML/SOAP and AS4.
• Design reliable interfaces and integration services to support complex business and regulatory requirements.

Testing, Deployment & Reliability

• Develop and maintain automated unit, integration and end-to-end tests.
• Perform testing, debugging and fault diagnosis to identify and resolve application errors and defects.
• Manage and improve software testing and deployment automation, including CI/CD pipelines and development tooling.
• Monitor and analyse operational metrics, application behaviour and system performance to identify anomalies and opportunities for improvement.
• Investigate production incidents, perform root-cause analysis and implement corrective and preventative measures.
• Develop and implement continuous improvement and continuous delivery practices across software development and deployment.

Security & Compliance

• Apply appropriate security practices, including access controls, encryption and secure handling of sensitive information.
• Analyse application and system anomalies, security events and technical issues to assist in identifying potential threats and vulnerabilities.
• Work with product and compliance specialists to translate regulatory requirements into clear, deterministic and testable software behaviour.
• Contribute to maintaining secure and reliable systems within a regulated technology environment.

Collaboration & Technical Documentation

• Collaborate with engineering, product and compliance specialists to understand requirements and develop practical technical solutions.
• Review source code and provide technical input to improve code quality, maintainability, security and adherence to development standards.
• Provide technical advice on software design approaches, technology solutions and system enhancements.
• Create and maintain technical, operational and end-user documentation.
• Take ownership of technical problems throughout the software development lifecycle, from design and implementation through to deployment and ongoing support.

Qualifications & Experience

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a closely related discipline.
• At least five years of professional software development experience.
• Strong commercial experience developing software using Node.js and TypeScript.
• Demonstrated experience designing, developing and maintaining APIs and distributed backend services.
• Hands-on experience designing and implementing AWS serverless solutions.
• Strong understanding of data modelling, asynchronous processing and event-driven architectures.
• Experience designing and implementing secure authentication, authorisation and multi-tenant application architectures.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals, including automated testing, source control, code review and maintainable software design.
• Experience troubleshooting, diagnosing and resolving complex application, integration and production issues.
• Demonstrated ability to take ownership of technical requirements and problems throughout the software development lifecycle.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document technical solutions, system designs and engineering decisions.
• Sufficient front-end development experience to contribute effectively to applications built with Angular.
