M Group in Ballarat is seeking an experienced SMSF leader to manage the delivery of SMSF compliance work, review complex matters and develop the team’s capability. You will work with advisers and other specialists to identify strategic opportunities for clients.

The role requires accountability for quality, deadlines and team performance while remaining hands-on with complex technical matters when required.

Qualifications

• Significant SMSF accounting, compliance and technical review experience at senior level.
• Ability to lead, mentor and develop accountants while managing priorities and deadlines.
• Strong knowledge of SMSF regulatory framework and accounting standards.

Responsabilités

• Review financial statements, tax returns, TBAR and supporting workpapers.
• Provide technical guidance on complex SMSF matters and stay updated on legislation.
• Oversee reconciliations and ensure audit-ready files with quality documentation.
• Build client relationships and communicate SMSF concepts in plain language.

We are looking for an accomplished SMSF professional who can combine strong technical expertise with team leadership, workflow management and high-quality client service. You will oversee the delivery of SMSF compliance work, review complex matters, develop team capability and work with advisers and other specialists across M Group to identify appropriate strategic opportunities for clients.

The role is suited to someone who is comfortable being accountable for quality, deadlines and team performance while remaining hands-on with complex technical matters when required.

The opportunity

We are looking for an accomplished SMSF professional who can combine strong technical expertise with team leadership, workflow management and high-quality client service. You will oversee the delivery of SMSF compliance work, review complex matters, develop team capability and work with advisers and other specialists across M Group to identify appropriate strategic opportunities for clients.

The role is suited to someone who is comfortable being accountable for quality, deadlines and team performance while remaining hands-on with complex technical matters when required.

Key responsibilities

• Review financial statements, tax returns, activity statements, pension calculations, TBAR obligations, trustee minutes and supporting workpapers.

• Provide technical guidance on complex SMSF compliance matters and maintain current knowledge of superannuation legislation, taxation requirements and applicable accounting standards.

• Oversee reconciliations of investments and bank accounts, trial balances and supporting documentation.

• Maintain quality-control processes and support the team to deliver audit-ready files with clear, complete workpapers.

• Build trusted client relationships and communicate complex SMSF matters in practical, plain language.

• Identify matters requiring specialist advice or broader strategic support, including pensions, contribution and recontribution strategies, tax efficiency, estate planning considerations and other opportunities.

• Collaborate with accounting, financial planning, legal, lending and other M Group teams to provide a coordinated client experience.

• Drive process improvement and effective use of Class and other technology to improve accuracy, visibility and turnaround times.

About you

• Significant experience in SMSF accounting, compliance and technical review, including experience at manager or senior leadership level.

• Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor and develop accountants while managing competing priorities and deadlines.

• Strong knowledge of the SMSF regulatory framework, superannuation taxation and accounting standards applicable to superannuation funds.

• Experience reviewing complex SMSF files and providing practical technical guidance to team members and clients.

• Advanced experience with Class Super is strongly preferred; experience with other SMSF and practice-management systems will also be valued.

• A bachelor's degree in accounting or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.

• CA or CPA qualification is preferred. SMSF specialist accreditation will be highly regarded.

• Excellent communication, judgement and stakeholder-management skills.

• A proactive, commercially minded approach, with the confidence to improve systems and address issues early.
