Job description

Specialist Rural Generalist | Smithton, Tasmania | Where the Tarkine Meets the Sea
About the Company

Ochre Health is a national leader in rural healthcare, supporting over 500 doctors across 70+ medical centres with industry-leading technology, practice support, and a collaborative culture. At Ochre Medical Centre Smithton, you’ll join a supportive team of clinicians and experienced practice nurses in a town where the daily commute involves the cleanest air in the world and views toward the iconic Nut at Stanley.

The Role

Looking for true clinical variety and broad-scope practice? This position perfectly balances primary care general practice with high-impact hospital and emergency coverage. Based in the heart of Tasmania’s North West, you’ll manage acute emergency presentations, inpatient admissions, and community health—offering the full, rewarding scope of Rural Generalism in a community that genuinely knows and values its doctors.

Why Smithton?

Smithton is the gateway to the rugged North West—a region where ancient wilderness meets a booming agricultural and coastal community:

  • The Tarkine Wilderness: Explore one of the world’s last great wild places, featuring ancient cool-temperate rainforests, the mystical Trowutta Arch, and the sinkholes of Dismal Swamp.
  • Iconic Landmarks: Located just 15 minutes from Stanley and "The Nut"—a dramatic volcanic plug offering panoramic views across the Bass Strait.
  • A Foodie’s Dream: Home to Tarkine Fresh Oysters, Cape Grim beef, and world-class local dairy. If you love paddock-to-plate living, this is your paradise.
  • Outdoor Adventure: Experience world-class surfing at Marrawah, 4WD wilderness tracks, or stand at the "Edge of the World" at Arthur River.
The Perks
  • Top-Tier Earning Potential: Total potential package value combining in-clinic billings (up to $380k) with a hospital on-call earning pool of $145k/year.
  • Sustainable Hospital Roster: A highly manageable hospital on-call commitment of just one day per week and one weekend per month (1:4 to 1:6 rotation).
  • Full Relocation & Living Support: Includes a comprehensive House & Car package (valued at $60k/year) plus sign-on and relocation assistance supported by Ochre and government programs.
  • Government Incentives: MMM5 & DPA location
  • Site Visit Support: A $2,000 grant is available for eligible applicants to come down, see the facility, meet the team, and experience the region firsthand.
Skills & Experience
  • Qualifications: Vocational Registration (FACRRM or FRACGP) with Specialist Registration as a GP and/or Rural Generalist (or progressing toward fellowship).
  • Clinical Readiness: Confidence in rural ED settings; current ALS2 or REST certification is preferred.
  • Spirit: A community-minded clinician with a genuine love for the great outdoors and a collaborative, "roll-up-your-sleeves" attitude.
This Is Your Sign

Smithton is renowned for its strong community spirit and genuine appreciation for its local doctors. If you’re ready for a rewarding career move that offers a true "work-life adventure" in one of Australia’s most pristine locations, let’s talk.
