Job description

Specialist Rural Generalist | Queenstown, Tasmania | The Gateway to the West Coast

Ochre Health is a national leader in rural medicine, supporting over 500 doctors with a collaborative culture, advanced technology, and dedicated administrative support. At Ochre Medical Centre Queenstown, you’ll join a supportive team including CDM-trained nursing support and an experienced practice management team—giving you the foundation to focus entirely on delivering broad-scope rural generalist care.

The Role

Looking for a role that offers true clinical autonomy and a landscape like nowhere else on Earth? This position perfectly balances primary care general practice with high-impact rural emergency and inpatient hospital services in one of Tasmania’s most iconic historic towns. Whether you are looking for a permanent “tree-change” or a high-earning FIFO schedule, Queenstown offers the full, deeply rewarding scope of Rural Generalism.

You will work alongside our Regional Medical Coordinator, Dr. Colin Smith (recipient of the RDAT Rural Doctor of the Year TAS award). Colin is passionate about mentoring Rural Generalists, helping doctors find their niche, and providing a supportive framework where you can exercise true clinical independence.

Why Queenstown? (An Adventurer’s Paradise)

Set against a dramatic “moonscape” of rugged hills and rich mining history, Queenstown is undergoing a massive transformation into a world-class outdoor hub:

  • World-Class Mountain Biking: Experience the adrenaline of the Mt Owen trails—offering some of the most unique, technical, and scenic riding in Australia right at your doorstep.
  • Wilderness Escapes: You are at the gateway of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, surrounded by ancient rainforests, alpine peaks, and world-class hiking.
  • Coastal Adventures: Just 40 minutes from Strahan, giving you easy access to Macquarie Harbour cruises, ocean beaches, and the Gordon River.
  • Unique Community: A resilient and welcoming town of 1,800 people where your work as a Rural Generalist makes a visible, daily impact.
The Perks & Flexibility

We understand that one size doesn’t fit all, which is why we offer flexible working arrangements—whether you choose a Permanent role or a 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off FIFO commitment. Both options come with full accommodation, vehicle, and relocation support:

  • Flexible Working Pathways: Choose between a Permanent position or a high-yield FIFO rotation (2 weeks on / 2 weeks off).
  • Earning Options: Total package value of $490,000 per annum (combining ~$300k in-clinic billings with a hospital on-call earning pool of $110k/year).
  • Sustainable Roster: A manageable 1:2 hospital on-call roster during your shift blocks.
  • Full Accommodation & Vehicle Provided: Includes a generous House & Car package (valued at $60k/year) provided on-site for both Permanent and FIFO doctors.
  • Travel & Relocation Support: Full travel coverage, flights, and attractive sign-on/relocation incentives supported by Ochre and government programs.
  • Maximum Government Incentives: MMM6 & DPA location—eligible for maximum moratorium reductions, WIP payments, and various procedural/rural generalist grants.
Skills & Experience
  • Qualifications: Vocational Registration (FACRRM or FRACGP) with Specialist Registration as a GP and/or Rural Generalist.
  • Clinical Readiness: Current ALS2 or REST certification for acute hospital, ED, and inpatient care participation.
  • Spirit: An autonomous clinician who enjoys broad-scope clinical variety and is eager to work within a supportive framework designed to help you settle into a dynamic rural community.
