Job summary

The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) seeks a high-calibre Telecommunications and Wireless Specialist in Canberra. Leadership is at the heart of this role. We are seeking a technical architect who understands that the best results come from supported, empowered teams. As a senior officer within ASIO, your objective is to be a "force multiplier" assisting to build a team of talented technologists. You will bridge the gap between high-level strategy and technical execution. You will work closely with the leadership team, providing clear, concise subject-matter advice to managers on emerging threats and opportunities.

ASIO looks for candidates who are curious, resilient and enjoy problem solving. To be successful in this role, you will understand wireless and telecommunications protocols, have the ability to remain focused on project delivery milestones and a demonstrated ability to develop junior staff.

A merit pool may be created to fill future vacancies which have the same or similar requirements to this position. This merit pool will be valid for up to 18 months.

The key duties of the position include:

Responsibilities

  • As a Telecommunications and Wireless Specialist in ASIO, you will:
  • Have an advanced understanding of wireless technology including 3GPP and ETSI law enforcement and disclosure standards.
  • Assist senior leaders with leading and managing a team of experienced technology and engineering professionals.
  • Deliver end-to-end support for capability, ensuring reliability and performance from deployment through to sustainment.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging telecommunications and wireless standards, evaluating their relevance and translating insights into actionable projects.
  • Work closely with technology teams, government agencies and industry partners to communicate complex concepts, capture lessons learned and continuously improve ASIO's telecommunications and wireless capabilities.
Eligibility

What you will bring

We are seeking candidates with the following capabilities:

  • Strong understanding of cellular radio networks including 3GPP standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the development of junior staff.
  • Extensive experience working with, or within the telecommunications industry.
  • Extensive experience integrating communications systems/solutions.
  • Extensive experience in programming languages to automate testing, configuration and analysis.
  • Experience in building strong relationships with stakeholders including technology teams, technology providers, key industry partners and government agencies.
  • Experience in project management, including stakeholder, supplier and risk management.
  • Experience supporting intelligence, security or law enforcement operations.
  • Extensive experience in writing technical documentation.
  • Effective communication skills including the ability to present technical information in a clear, concise and articulate manner.

Skills and qualifications

The following qualifications are desirable, but are not required:

  • Formal qualifications or tertiary education in communications engineering and/or radio frequency related disciplines.

Employment is under the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979. Conditions of service are similar to those applying in the Australian Public Service. We recognise entitlements accrued under the Public Service Act 1999 and provide for continuation of superannuation under the Commonwealth schemes. Salary packaging arrangements are also available.
