Job summary

TAFE Queensland in Cairns seeks an AO4 Simulator Operator to maintain and operate the Kongsberg Ship Simulator for mainstream and contract training. You will create scenarios with educators and support maritime training programs, ensuring compliance with STCW and related standards. Based at GBRIMC Cairns, you may work across campuses as required.

The role reports to Operations Manager, Maritime, and is a permanent, full-time position with a focus on excellence in marine simulation training.

Your Opportunity

As a Simulator Operator, You Will

• Provide simulation training services for mainstream accredited Maritime courses, commercial contracts, as well as specialist non-accredited programs.
• Maintain and improve the simulation facility and its associated systems.

This position reports to the Operations Manager, Maritime.

This is a Permanent, Full-Time opportunity

The position will be based primarily at Great Barrier Reef International Marine College - Cairns, however you may be required to perform work at other TAFE Queensland campuses.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain and operate a Kongsberg Ship Simulator and associated software and hardware.
• Undertake operational simulator tasks across all mainstream and contract accredited and non-accredited delivery. This includes but is not limited to system pre-starts, loading and managing exercises, configuring the simulator bridges for delivery, shutting down and troubleshooting.
• Create simulator scenarios/exercises for students in consultation and collaboration with educators.
• Contribute to improvement in business processes and practices to establish and maintain GBRIMC as a centre of excellence in marine simulation training.
• Implement and follow policies and procedures relating to the maritime activities of the Kongsberg ship simulator.
• Liaise and consult with internal and external stakeholders including educators, students, clients and technical support personnel.
• Database modification and maintenance, along with associated administration and record-keeping tasks.
• Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the statutory requirements of the Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers 1978 (STCW) Regulations and other relevant legislation, current trends and product developments within the maritime industry.
• Undertake research and development on matters relating to business functions.
• Ensure day to day activities align with business operations.
• Contribute to the success of transformation and cultural change through promoting and modelling the established values of Showing Initiative, Working Together, Focusing on our Customer and Taking Responsibility.

How You Will Be Assessed

• Demonstrate an understanding of maritime principles and electronic navigation.

• High level written and verbal communication skills and ability to liaise, consult and negotiate with a broad range of internal and external clients, with the added ability to relate technical issues.
• Displays flexibility and responsiveness and has the initiative, attitude and ability to thrive within a dynamic, challenging and changing environment.
• Demonstrated high level ICT problem-solving skills.

Highly Desirable Requirements

• Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or equivalent.
• Possession of maritime qualifications, preferably Deck or Watch keeping.
• Evidence of experience and/ or training in a simulator or virtual environment.
