Job summary

Newcastle Anglican is seeking a capable SHS Team Leader to guide the Samaritans Homelessness Services team in the Lower Hunter region. You will lead frontline staff, ensure delivery of trauma-informed services, and collaborate with partner organisations to achieve housing outcomes for young people.

This full-time, maximum-term role requires strong leadership, program development experience, and the ability to manage reporting for funding bodies.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Psychology, Social Work or related disciplines, OR related experience.
  • Proven leadership in child protection or community services programs.
  • Experience building partnerships with external organisations at a senior level.
  • Trauma-informed and strengths-based approach with young people; understanding trauma responses.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor performance and support SHS staff to ensure quality services.
  • On-call availability outside regular hours as needed.
  • Provide strong, consultative leadership across sites in the Lower Hunter and Newcastle.
  • Develop practice framework and accountability tools to meet funding requirements.
  • Foster a learning culture with open communication and staff development.
  • Align team goals with the Organisational Plan and funding specifications.
  • Maintain contact with partner services and external providers working with care leavers.
  • Apply current trauma-informed best practices and evidence-based approaches.
  • Track outputs and outcomes; manage reporting for internal and funding bodies.
  • Lead team meetings, provide supervision, and organise group case consultations.
  • Recruit and induct new staff as required.

The Opportunity - Full Time - Maximum Term Contract until 30th June 2027

The Lower Hunter based Samaritans Homelessness Services (SHS) Team Leader will work as part of the whole SHS team and is responsible for the provision of leadership for the SHS team.

The SHS sector is a vital part of the broader service system that is working towards ending homelessness. SHS service providers support people who are experiencing, or who are at risk of homelessness, through early intervention, crisis and transitional support; and post crisis support services. The program's primary objective is to ensure people who are experiencing homelessness, or who are at risk of homelessness, are supported to achieve safe and stable housing in the community.

Samaritans Homelessness Services (SHS) provide an extensive range of support to disadvantaged young people with an emphasis on those at risk of homelessness or who are homeless. Core services include crisis accommodation support, outreach, early intervention and activities, employment, family, and group work, working with schools and information and referral.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Monitor performance and provide support to SHS case workers and staff, to ensure the effective delivery of quality services in an environment that focuses on Young People's strengths and capabilities.
  • This position may require the employee to be available on-call outside of regular working hours, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays, on an as‑needed basis. The employee is expected to respond promptly to on-call requests and perform necessary duties as directed
  • Provide strong, supportive, and consultative leadership to the SHS team across various sites in the Lower Hunter and Newcastle regions.
  • Contribute to the development of the practice framework and accountability tools to ensure program outcomes are aligned with service deliverables, objectives, and budget management.
  • Facilitate and maintain a progressive team culture where learning and development and open communication is encourages.
  • Align team goals with both Samaritans Organisational Strategic Plan and service delivery specifications are required by funding bodies.
  • Develop and maintain regular contact with partner services, DCJ and external service providers where there is engagement with young people leaving care.
  • Ensure to date knowledge and application of evidence based, trauma informed theory and practice.
  • Track outputs and outcomes of the team and facilitate all reporting requirements - both organizationally and for funding body requirements.
  • Facilitate and participate in team meetings, provide 1:1 supervision for team members and facilitate group supervision / case consultation.
  • Recruit and induct new staff as required
About you?
  • Tertiary qualification in Psychology, Social Work or related disciplines, OR related experience
  • Demonstrated successful track record of leadership for child protection or community services programs.
  • Experience in creating, negotiating and maintaining partnerships with external organisations at a senior level
  • Experience in working from a Trauma Informed and Strengths Based perspective with young people, and a sound understanding of trauma responses.
  • Effective leadership skills, including proven ability to provide formal and informal group supervision to staff.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills including mediation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Highly developed documentation skills with demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to develop rapport with young people, their families and significant others.
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to maintain confidentiality and accountability, including client records, team, and organisational discussions
  • Demonstrated understanding of current State and Commonwealth Child Protection guidelines and legislation.
  • Experience managing accountability frameworks and meeting KPI's.
  • Well-developed time management and organisational skills, including demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
