Job summary

SeaLink South Australia in Cape Jervis is seeking a permanent full-time Maintenance Technician to support the Maintenance Technical Manager and land-based team, ensuring a reliable ferry service to Kangaroo Island. You will lead the Shore-Based Maintenance team, service vessels and infrastructure, and perform regular inspections and diagnostic repairs.

You will have a Mechanical Trade Certificate (diesel fitter or similar), demonstrable leadership, a valid driver’s licence, police clearance,

Qualifications

  • Essential Mechanical Trade Certificate.
  • Experience servicing and inspecting commercial vessels.
  • Experience leading a maintenance team and logging records.
  • Current open driver’s licence, National Police Clearance, First Aid and CPR are essential.
  • Proficiency with MEX fleet management software or similar.
  • Desirable MED1 engine licence and forklift/Working at Heights qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the Shore-Based Maintenance team.
  • Maintain, service, and repair vessels and infrastructure.
  • Conduct regular testing and inspections of vessels and machinery.
  • Respond promptly to emergency and breakdown maintenance.
  • Diagnose problems and implement rectifications.
  • Proactively identify and report maintenance issues and document records for compliance.
  • Work to meet tight maintenance schedules and deadlines.

Exciting new opportunity to support the new Kangaroo Island Ferry Service

About the Role

A permanent full-time role to support the Maintenance Technical Manager and land-based team to provide a continuous, reliable transport service to and from Kangaroo Island. We require a person with a broad skill base, preferably in the marine maintenance field, with a diesel fitter/mechanical or trade background and who lives on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Flexibility with hours will be available and supported, including TOIL, during specific times, with the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and tight maintenance schedules.

This role reports to the Maintenance Technical Manager and is part of the shore-based maintenance team working primarily from our Cape Jervis location. There will be some travel required to Penneshaw (KI).

More about the tasks:

  • Manage the Shore-Based Maintenance team
  • Maintain, service, and general repairs to the vessels and infrastructure
  • Conduct regular testing and inspections of vessels and machinery
  • Respond promptly to emergency and breakdown maintenance requirements
  • Diagnostic problem-solving & rectification
  • Proactively identify and report potential maintenance issues – preventative management
  • Ensure complete and accurate maintenance records to meet compliance

We will need you to have the following skills and experience:

  • Certificate in Mechanical Trade (Diesel fitter, electrical, refrigeration or plumbing) - Essential
  • Marine Engine Drivers 1 (MED1) or greater – desirable
  • Experience in servicing, conducting periodical inspections, managing preventative maintenance schedules, and undertaking repairs to commercial vessels
  • Computer knowledge, proficiency with MEX fleet management software or similar
  • Experience in managing and leading a team - Essential
  • Demonstrate current product knowledge & diagnostic skills
  • You must hold a current open driver’s licence - Essential
  • You must have a current National Police Clearance - Essential
  • Provide First Aid – Essential
  • CPR – Essential
  • Forklift licence – desirable
  • Working at Heights - desirable

To be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate your experience in a similar role with the ability to provide a high quality of work, preferably in the Marine Industry. You will often work unsupervised therefore initiative and motivation will be key. Results driven with a ‘can-do’ attitude, with the ability to meet tight deadlines and work schedules, is essential to ensure the continuality of our ferry service.
