Job summary

Qualifications

About the Opportunity

As part of the Infrastructure Program, the Senior Transport Engineer plays an important role in shaping how people move through and experience the City of Adelaide. The role provides expert advice on transport infrastructure and design while working with a wide range of stakeholders, including State and Australian Governments, to support safe, efficient and sustainable transport systems.

This position contributes to the delivery of city-shaping projects, such as City of Adelaide Road Safety Projects, City Mainstreet Upgrades and private and state development works, by leading the research, development and implementation of transport and streetscape initiatives. With a strong focus on collaboration, the role works closely with internal teams, external consultants and community groups to ensure projects reflect the needs of our community and align with the City of Adelaide's Strategic Plan.

Beyond technical expertise, the Senior Transport Engineer helps create positive transport outcomes by providing clear, people-friendly advice, managing projects from planning to delivery, and supporting consultation activities that invite community feedback. The role also mentors and develops team members, building capability to deliver innovative solutions that enhance movement and mobility across the city.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A tertiary qualification in civil engineering, traffic engineering, transport planning or related field and/or commensurate demonstrated experience in lieu of formal qualifications.
  • Extensive (minimum 10-15 years) relevant experience in design of multi-modal transport infrastructure, including pedestrian, cycling/micromobility, public transport, that integrate with urban design and landscape architecture.
  • Understanding of traffic/road/parking and events legislative environment as it relates to local government.
  • Experience in preparation of project briefs, procurement and contract management of planning and design consultants.
  • Knowledge and ability to interpret and apply the Road Traffic Act (1961), relevant Australian Standards and Austroads Guidelines, and The Australian Road Rules (1999), DIT's Code of Technical Requirements and associated documents including experience in the preparation and review of Traffic Impact Statements and Traffic Control Drawings.
  • Knowledge and understanding of safe systems and road safety audits.
  • Interest in traffic signals operations and willingness to develop a deeper understanding.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including effective ability to set strategic direction of complex transport infrastructure and design projects and proposals.
