Job summary

Optus, a leading Australian telecommunications company, is seeking a Senior Technical Specialist to join the Telco IP & PE team based in Macquarie Park, Sydney. You will design and deliver IP network connectivity solutions that enable critical telecommunications platforms across the Optus network.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, with a certified network professional qualification such as CCNP or CCIE highly regarded.
• 15+ years’ experience in IP network engineering, including at least five years in a leadership role and significant experience delivering complex engineering solutions and large-scale projects.
• Deep knowledge of TCP/IP, UDP, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, SR-MPLS, SR-TE, RSVP-TE, LDP, SRv6, EVPN, IPVPN, L2VPN, QoS and traffic engineering.

Responsibilities

• Design IP network connectivity solutions for telecommunications platforms and services, aligned to network and solution architectures and design templates.
• Develop low-level designs, technical documentation, automation configurations, testing plans and implementation activities for the production network.
• Contribute to onboarding routers and switches across the Telco IP network, including large-scale Provider Edge solutions using Cisco, Juniper and Nokia technologies.
• Collaborate with internal customers, project teams, vendors and wider IP teams to clarify requirements, assess feasibility and finalise solutions through the review process.
• Provide technical recommendations, impact assessments and design support for projects, shared IP domains and critical operational issues.
• Build trusted relationships across the business, communicate complex technical solutions clearly, contribute to escalation meetings and provide a practical technical path forward.

We’re looking for a Senior Technical Specialist to join our Telco IP & PE team based in Macquarie Park, Sydney. In this role, you’ll design and deliver IP network connectivity solutions that enable critical telecommunications platforms and services across the Optus network.

You’ll translate business and technical requirements into robust low-level designs, documentation, automation, testing and production implementations. With deep expertise across routing, switching, data-centre networking, firewalls and hybrid cloud connectivity, you’ll work with internal teams, project partners and vendors to shape scalable solutions and provide technical direction during complex delivery and operational challenges.

What You’ll Do

What makes you perfect for the role?

• 15+ years’ experience in IP network engineering, including at least five years in a leadership role and significant experience delivering complex engineering solutions and large-scale projects.
• Deep knowledge of TCP/IP, UDP, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, SR-MPLS, SR-TE, RSVP-TE, LDP, SRv6, EVPN, IPVPN, L2VPN, QoS and traffic engineering.
• Strong experience designing and managing BNG, CGNAT, Telco Cloud Connect edge router, data-centre fabric and firewall solutions across on-premises and hybrid cloud environments.
• Practical understanding of network security, including IPSEC, MACsec, DDoS mitigation, micro-segmentation, zero-trust architectures, network hardening and BGP security, together with experience using automation frameworks such as Ansible, NSO and Netconf/YANG.
• A strategic, customer-focused and collaborative approach, with strong communication, coaching, mentoring, vendor management, problem-solving and influencing skills, and the ability to work under pressure, including late-night implementation and troubleshooting activities.
