Job summary

Optus is seeking an IP & Security Technical Specialist to sustain the performance, availability, and customer experience of the Optus Network. This role operates in a Tier 2/3 environment with 24x7 or 9-5 roster coverage from the Macquarie Park campus in Sydney.

The incumbent will lead technical governance with suppliers, drive incident management automation, and collaborate across networks engineering and managed services to rollout new technologies and improve service reliability.

Qualifications

  • Extensive hands-on experience with multi-vendor IP and security networks.
  • Strong knowledge of routing, switching, and security practices.
  • Experience with network automation tools (Python, Ansible) is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Rapidly resolve complex network faults and manage critical incident escalations.
  • Lead root cause analysis and participate in Change Advisory Board meetings.
  • Recommend network design changes to improve reliability and support new tech.
  • Ensure upgrades align with quality and performance standards.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Vendors and Managed Service Suppliers.
  • Provide technical insights into KPIs and SLAs.

Job description

The IP & Security Technical Specialist / Senior Technical Specialist plays a critical role in maintaining the performance, availability, and customer experience of the Optus Network. This is achieved through hands‑on operational execution and the technical governance of suppliers, focusing on service assurance areas such as Change, Problem, and Incident Management. The role is part of a Tier 2 Network Operations team based in the Optus Network Operations Centre in Macquarie Park and we are looking to fulfil roles that involve 24x7 as well as 9‑5 rostered coverage.In this position, the Specialist will deliver high-quality support, provide leadership to less experienced team members, and act as a key liaison between internal teams and external partners. The role requires collaboration with Managed Service Suppliers, equipment vendors, and Network Engineering teams to support the successful rollout of new technologies, continuous service improvement initiatives, and alignment with Optus’ broader network strategy.

  • Location: 100% on site at Macquarie Park, Sydney
  • Work Pattern: either Rotating shift roster, including morning, afternoon and night OR Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm
  • Rapidly resolve complex network faults beyond the Managed Service’s scope and manage critical incident escalations to minimise customer impact.
  • Lead root cause analysis, implement permanent corrective actions, and participate in change governance including representation at Change Advisory Board meetings.
  • Recommend and approve network design changes to improve service reliability and support the introduction of new technologies and products.
  • Ensure planned network upgrades and deployments are aligned with quality and performance standards, and contribute to network expansion strategies.
  • Work closely with Engineering, Vendors, and Managed Service Suppliers to align operational processes and architecture standards, ensuring technical supportability.
  • Provide regular technical insights into KPIs and SLAs, identify performance gaps, and support resolution efforts through stakeholder collaboration.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives through automation of incident management and alarm handling, while contributing to the evolution of operational tools and strategies.
  • Extensive hands‑on expertise in maintaining and troubleshooting multi‑vendor (Cisco, Juniper, Nokia, Fortinet, Checkpoint, …) IP and security networks in a Tier 2 or Tier 3 environment.
  • Strong understanding of service provider network design, routing and switching, and security practices.
  • Experience with network automation tools such as Python and Ansible is desirable.
IP Operations
  • Strong understanding of DDoS protection, detection, and mitigation strategies.
  • High proficiency in IP/MPLS technologies, including BGP, OSPF, IS‑IS, and Segment Routing.
  • Demonstrated capability in maintaining and troubleshooting large‑scale IP/MPLS networks within service provider environments.
  • Cisco CCNP SP and above, and/or equivalent vendor certifications (Juniper, Nokia, etc.) are desirable.
