Job summary

Rio Tinto in Perth is seeking a Senior Specialist – Mobile Equipment to join the Global Mobile Equipment team. You will support a portfolio of strategic programs spanning China sourcing, emerging equipment technology, decarbonisation and major growth projects.

This is a tangible, hands-on commercial role turning opportunities into sourcing strategies, supplier engagements, contracts and investment recommendations, working with Chinese manufacturers and technology partners across Rio Tinto.

About The Role

At Rio Tinto, we are finding better ways to procure mobile equipment while improving safety, productivity, cost performance and emissions outcomes across our global operations. The Mobile Equipment Procurement team develops commercial strategies and works with global suppliers and business teams to deliver practical equipment solutions.

We are looking for a Senior Specialist – Mobile Equipment to join our Global Mobile Equipment team. You will support a portfolio of strategic programs spanning China sourcing, emerging equipment technology, decarbonization and major growth projects.

This is a tangible, hands‑on commercial role where you will help turn opportunities into sourcing strategies, supplier engagements, contracts and investment recommendations. You will gain broad exposure across Rio Tinto and work with established and emerging suppliers, including Chinese manufacturers and technology partners.

Reporting to the Principal – Mobile Equipment, you will

  • Support the development and execution of commercial strategies for strategic programs across mobile equipment, including targeted subcategory strategies, adapting the approach as industry, market and technology landscapes evolve.
  • Support commercial and contracting activities for HME decarbonisation and mobile equipment technology and China HME projects, helping translate electrification, autonomous and emerging technology trials into practical commercial outcomes.
  • Support supplier relationship management across established and emerging global and Chinese suppliers, contributing to engagement, governance, performance, innovation, risk management and joint value creation.
  • Provide commercial support to major project teams on fleet selection, sourcing strategy, supplier engagement and investment decisions.
  • Assess and progress investment, sourcing and commercial partnership opportunities, including preparing evaluations and materials for senior leadership and investment committees.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders, including global operational teams, China Sourcing, R&D and major project teams, to provide commercial input and support project progression.
  • Foster a culture of zero harm, inclusion and continuous improvement.
What You’ll Bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will ideally have

  • A commitment to the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others.
  • Experience in procurement, commercial, contracts, project delivery, supply chain, engineering or a related field.
  • The ability to analyse information, identify key issues and support practical recommendations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear commercial materials.
  • The confidence to work with stakeholders and suppliers across different teams, cultures and locations.
  • Good organisation skills and the ability to coordinate several activities and priorities.
  • A collaborative and curious approach, with a willingness to learn and challenge existing ways of working.
  • Exposure to mining, mobile equipment, technology projects or China sourcing would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • A tertiary qualification in business, law, engineering, supply chain or a related discipline would be advantageous but is not essential.
