Job summary

Talenza is partnering with a major defence organisation to hire a Senior Software Engineer for mission-critical platforms. This onsite role spans Canberra, Melbourne CBD and Scoresby (VIC) on a 9-month fixed-term contract with a 180,000 annual package.

You will work across the full SDLC, contribute to design and delivery, and apply secure engineering practices, CI/CD, and modern tooling while mentoring junior engineers.

Qualifications

• Strong software engineering fundamentals with delivery experience in complex environments.
• Experience building API services and enterprise integration patterns.
• Hands-on development, testing, and deployment support.
• Familiarity with DevOps, CI/CD, Docker, and Kubernetes.
• Experience with Agile delivery (Agile/Kanban).

This is a chance to join a high-performing engineering team working on a large-scale information integration program, where secure engineering practices, quality delivery, and modern tooling are non-negotiable.

What you'll be doing

You’ll work across the full SDLC and contribute to design and delivery of secure, enterprise-grade solutions. Responsibilities will include:

• Leading and contributing to solution design, prototyping, and engineering approach selection
• Translating requirements into technical deliverables in collaboration with systems/engineering stakeholders
• Hands-on development, unit/integration testing, and support through release/deployment
• Promoting and embedding engineering best practices (secure coding, quality, CI/CD)
• Mentoring and supporting junior engineers where needed

What we're looking for

To be successful, you’ll bring strong software engineering fundamentals plus solid delivery experience in complex environments, including:

• Strong commercial experience with Java and JavaScript
• Experience building API services and working with enterprise integration patterns
• Working knowledge of DevOps / CI/CD, plus tools such as Docker and Kubernetes
• Experience with Agile delivery (Agile / Kanban)
• Comfort working with tools like Jira and Confluence
• Exposure to geospatial systems is highly regarded
